I reckon it'll be some time before these are in general availability, but there is an announcement today of a 48Gb drive from IBM with some significant new technology.

That is the IBM announcement that contains all the real details.

48Gb sounds very nice :) It can hold almost as many albumns in wav format as my original 4Gb model can hold in mp3 format. Are we going to see lossless compression e.g. shorten support in the empeg soon?

"These efforts result in acoustical noise reduction, improved shock tolerance and superior reliability."

Sounds ideal for the empeg. IBM already had the highest shock ratings,. The new ones have :
800 G/1ms nonoperating shock
180 G/2 ms operating shock

I'm just drooling at the possibility of 96gb in an Empeg. Everything encoded either lossless or at an incredibly high bit rate. With taxi space left over, too.

Naw... with increased storage we will just want to put more on there.. maybe video files or something crazy like that. Dolby Digital or DTS 5.1, who knows. But, then the great cache on the empeg would be comprimised. Or how about a backup onto a spare drive within the empegcar? Anyway, anyone have any idea what the price will be on these? Hopefully, it will push the price of the 30gig models below $200. THAT would be nice!

There was an interview on CNet with the Portable Drive Division head honcho at IBM, and he said that it would raise the price of a laptop about $100 with the 48Gig drive... so i'd bet the price point will be around $325-400 at the time of introduction. And it will be damn nice if the price of the 30 Gigs drop, sign me up for one-a-dem.

Great idea, maybe we could hookup a DVD drive to the 2nd IDE channel :)

I like the idea of a back up drive in the empeg. I'm still afraid of loosing all my countless hours (due to a hd crash) that i've spent on the empeg making my playlists, and naming all my mp3s, etc....

Does anyone know a price of the 48GB?

Anyone maybe a link to a cheap(!!) 30 GB 2,5"? (Maybe less than 300 US$)

I was originally planning (before I started loading more and more music on the empeg) to try using the second drive as a mirror. Has anyone ever pulled this off before???

I see a few options here:

1) There was a typo on the order page, and you've just gotten a pair of 7.2 gig drives.

2) As the rest of us suspect, you got 3.5" desktop drives. Those will be neat for your desktop computer but won't do your empeg any good. Perhaps you should read this.

3) Someone's invented 72 gig laptop drives that no one else here knows about. If that's the case, WHERE DID YOU GET THEM!?!?!

4) You fitted an outbound IDE-cable and connected it to an external file cabinet.
