Question to all... I am a newbie at this car mp3 stuff so you can flame me if you want... but why do you all riocar/empeg users prefer the it over the Neo car jukebox?

the Neo seems to be expandable just as the rio car

the Neo includes an fm tuner

Don't get me wrong, I've already purchased a rio car, but I would like to know if there's a reason not to also purchase a neo...

Neo has an FM modulator, not tuner.

For the best un-biased comparison see here. As someone who has owned both, there is no comparison other then they both play MP3s from a hard drive.

thanks michael and rob... the comparison chart was very comprehensive.

But does one sound better than the other? What do you think the advantages of the rio are over the neo... anybody?

Thanks to all for the input.

But does one sound better than the other?

That, of course, is a subjective opinion, so isn't even worth asking. I'll simply ask which has the more comprehensive equalizer, and thus, the better potential to sound the way you want it to sound.

What do you think the advantages of the rio are over the neo... anybody?

You've already been pointed to the matrix, I'm not sure what else you want. Are we supposed to talk about the fact that you can use a Kenwood remote? Or that there's a nice handle to carry it with? Or that there's a tiny little hole in the case made for a laptop security cable? Or that I can write software for the empeg? Or that there's the button hack, and the different lenses?

Quite frankly, both questions sound like a troll...

I agree...the matrix really says it all.

The Neo really has no advantages over the Empeg except maybe that you can mount it in your trunk. That's about it. Everything else about the Empeg is better. (I'm not subjective, I've owned both...guess which one I still own and which one I've sold?)

Oh boy......
No one can tell you what the matrix is, you have to see it for yourself....

I don't think that matrix is particularly meaningful. Two products can look almost identical on such a list, but that doesn't mean they're not worlds apart in reality. If you want a meaningful comparison you just have to live with both products for a few weeks.

That may be true, but if the matrix can't really describe the difference, then I doubt that any other even vaguely objective description could, either.

But they don't look alike on the matrix. I pointed a friend who was asking about the Neo vs. the Empeg at that matrix. After reading it, he came back and said "Wow, you're right... the Neo is crap."

That's because the best stuff is under the hood - both products support hard disks, but only one of them has a robust caching algorithm; both let you select content to play, but only one has a flexible running order model; both support shuffle but only one has a progmatically weighted algorithm; and so forth.

only one of them has a robust caching algorithm;

See the Drive Playback Operation line item.

only one has a flexible running order model;

See the Playlist Support line item.

only one has a progmatically weighted [shuffle] algorithm;

See the Shuffle / Random Playback Modes line item.

and so forth.

and so forth.

Just because it's under the hood, doesn't mean the matrix didn't include it... it might be worded a little different, that's all.

The empeg demolishes the neo when it comes to sound quality... I've had both so I know. Even when I had my neo on max output volume so my amplifiers didn't have to amplify as much, I still got static. I hear absolutely no static on my empeg
