So they changed it.

That's too bad. I almost signed up last night.

I'll be canceling before midnight Nov. 7th, before which i'm going to be on a downloading frenzy. MAN.... I JUST signed up. Grrr.

What i want to know, is will I still be charged $10/month since i signed up for the year????

N/M... just read the email:

Unless you visit the link below:
http://help.emusic.com/cu/index.cgi?cmd=step2&st=1&categoryID=1198
and notify us of your intention to cancel your subscription
prior to November 8, 2003, your EMusic subscription will
convert into EMusic Basic. Under EMusic Basic, you will be
billed $9.99 per month for access to the service with no
minimum monthly commitment, but you will be limited to no
more than 40 downloads during your monthly billing cycle.

Those of us who signed up for the $15 3-month thing get 65 downloads a month.

Oh, well. I guess I'll finish my trial and cancel.

They're going under either way IMHO. They are gonig to lose a HUGE percentage of their subscribers because of this... i'd venture to say 90%.

In the mean time... i can't download anything... their site is hosed at the moment... and they've taken down the message boards, not surprising.

Boy, I am glad my contract ran out last month. I canceled then. I went with allof mp3.com. They have almost all of the music I needed for around a penny or two a song..

Damn, that does suck. I hope the site opens up a bit in the next month, as at the moment I can't download anything.

I assume they realize that they're going to loose just about all of their current subscriber base. 40 tracks is less than what people were complaining about when they put a limit on how many tracks you could que up at once. I guess this is one of those "it was nice while it lasted" things.

Hmmmm. I'm watching a bit more closely, and I'd say they're just throttling downloads. Once they get out of "requesting file" they go plenty fast. Taking down the message boards is pretty low. I wonder how long they'll be out for.

My guess? Forever. In fact they were down last night before this press release came out. Why would you provide a forum for people to flame you? I can't blame them. Who wants to be yelled at when you've essentially just had to pull the plug on yourself?

I going to see if I can hit the 2000 mark this month. What do I have to lose?

Anyone know of some good avant-garde jazz radio stations? I used to listed to antennaradio.com, but they went under, and emusic had some good labels for jazz.

On a related note, napster is coming back (see the press release but it looks to me like they're only supporting windows audio format. /sigh.

I was only ever able to DL one album, the rest of the time I got a sharing violation error or the .emp file wasn't found, but my number of free downloads left decreased everytime I tried to get a song. Support never answered me, all for the better now I see... I really wanted all the George Carlin stuff, all I got was CCR's Green River.

how did it used to work? Did you just pay $10 per month, or whatever it was, and download as many mp3s as you wanted? They were clean mp3s? You could them put thoes mp3s on your empeg? What bitrate were the mp3s?

Don't bother trying now. They are being pounded by everyone trying to download before they cancel. It's a mess.

It used to work beautifully. $10/month for a year, All VBR Lame encoded MP3's, no rights restrictions, unlimited downloads (though rumor was they'd cut you off at 2000 tracks/month), and you could burn or upload to your empeg to your hearts content. Twas a beautiful thing....

$10 per month if you signed up for a year; $15 per month if you signed up for three months. Download a supposedly unlimited number of tracks; supposedly, they kept a 2000 track per month tacit cap that if you went over you got canned. The tracks are simple mp3s encoded by lame, most at --alt-preset standard, some at 128kbps CBR. There's no rights restriction stuff. I've not yet heard a rip that sounded bad at all.

I actually found some tracks that had bursts of noise in them. I was going to send them the information, but I won't bother now.

Hello

Here in Spain we have another alternative, of course you'll be able to subscribe too.
I pay 30€/month and I have unlimited legal downloads. 192kbps and almost everything new (here). Not much about old albums... a pity, but still a good resource.

www.weblisten.com

cheers,

Miguel.
