I have an external drive that I use for moving files back and forth from work. When I plugged it in to my PC last night and went to access it thru Windows Explorer it gave this messege..."File or directory is corrupted and unreadable." My first question is, does this mean it is fried? My 2nd question is is there any way to get the data off of this drive? Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks

Not necessarily. Have you tried running CHKDSK on the drive?

Ok, When I right click on the drive and go to properties the Volume label field is empty. If I accidentally deleted that would it cause this? Also it shows up as 0Mb free of 0Mb Available. As for chkdsk, when I do this from the properties window on the TOOLS tab. I check off "Autoatically fix file system errors" and "scan for and attempt recovery of bad sectors" . When I click start, nothing seems to happen. Is this normal or should a window pop up showing the staus of chkdsk. Or am I not even in the right place???
