Hello

Now we have V3 alpha software and the new filetypes it supports it has made me dream up a list. I thought it would be usefull if we could say for a given filesize of a standard ~4 minute track which encoder to use for the the best sound.

So 40-50MB files = WAV
12-15MB Files= *
8-10MB files = *
5-6MB files=256kbps VBR MP3

*Anyone know what to put here? OGG, 320kbps VBR MP3, xxx, FLAC??

320kbps VBR MP3 doesn't make any sense. 320kbps is the maximum bitrate for mp3, so it would have to be CBR. A 4 minute song at that rate would be 9.5MB.

I don't think WAV makes any sense on the empeg. It'll keep your hard drive spun up all the time and you won't get any better quality than FLAC. A 4-minute 16-bit 44.1kHz stereo WAV file will be 40MB. Since it's the largest possible file for that data, it's the only thing that even fits your highest category.

FLACs average out to maybe two-thirds to four-fifths the size of an equivalent WAV, you don't have a category it will even fit into.

I can't think of any format that would fit into the 12-15MB category.

You could have arguments about which of Ogg Vorbis, mp3, or WMA sounds better, but they're likely to be subjective. However, assuming that specifying the bitrate for your VBR mp3s means you're doing the average bitrate thing, you'll get better results by going with a quality preset that doesn't necessarily equate to a specific bitrate.

Personally, I just go with lame's --preset standard mp3s for virtually everything.

Remember that the V3 alpha software is just that: Alpha, and if you're interested in the player being stable and rock-solid, then V2 software with MP3s is still your best bet.

For my money, MP3 is still the best bet even with OGG and FLAC availability, because of the huge amount of available tools to work on the files. Things like taggers, trimmers, organizers and such are plentiful for MP3s, and fairly rare for the other file types. There are things I can do to my MP3 collection with tools like MP3 Tag Studio that I can't do with any other file type.

They've hacked around this now. 320kbps is only the maximum for the official specification. LAME lets you use the free format option which goes up to 640kbps.

I don't think the decoder used in the Empeg understands free-format MP3, does it?

I've not tried it in a while but last time I did, the decoder didn't appreciate it.
