Anyone know of some software (win32) to cleanup mp3's generated from old, old cassettes.
The current quality is rather poor, stereo dropping in and out, whipping around from left to right etc. Volume inconsistencies, etc. Generaly what you would hear from your old AC/DC or Fleetwood Mac tapes in your old '81 Malibu. It sounds like crap, unless you crank the vol, you know what I am getting at.

Any ideas?

Anyone know of some software (win32) to cleanup mp3's generated from old, old cassettes.

First things first:

You shouldn't perform the cleanup on the MP3 files. MP3s are "lossy compressed", meaning that some (very slight) sound quality has been lost in the compression. If possible, you should work with the original wave files as they were ripped from the cassettes, not the compressed MP3 files.

In order to clean up the MP3s, you would have to decompress them into wave format, edit the wave, then re-compress them into MP3. MP3-compressing a wave twice can induce some unwanted artifacts.

(Note that many modern wave editor programs will directly open an MP3 file for editing, and will also save directly to MP3. They are still doing the steps I described above, they're just doing it under-the-hood to make the process simpler. They are still doing the same double-recompression I just described and this should still be avoided if possible.)

Okay, with that out of the way, the next question becomes: Why do you need to edit cassette copies of something anyway? If this is an old cassette of a commercial recording, you're better off just buying the CD version. I'm assuming that these are cassettes of something not available in CD form, so on to the next question:

Is there any way to re-grab the audio data on better equipment, or from a better original source? For instance, were these cassettes made from some other master source such as a reel-to-reel tape? You'll get much better quality if you can go back to that for your source. And if these cassettes were grabbed from a cheap cassette player on a cheap sound card, you'll have quality problems there that could be resolved by performing the grab on better equipment.

Finally, to answer your real question: What software is available to clean up analog recordings to make them sound better? The answer is that just about any high-end wave editor program will do: Cool Edit, Sound Forge, etc. These programs all have noise reduction functions, EQ's, dynamic compressors, normalizers, and all the other tools needed to edit a wave file. Many CD-recorder drives also come with some simple wave editing software designed to remove pops and scratches from LP record rips and normalize them for CD burning.

But in all of those cases, "cleaning up" a recording is an art in itself. There's nothing that can magically restore the recording to its original state. It's a GIGO system- if you feed it a bad recording to begin with, you're just polishing a turd. The art comes in making the turd stink a little less. For that, you need to spend a lot of time playing with the filters and monitoring the results on a very good set of speakers. If you're willing to do that, then I'd suggest Cool Edit or Sound Forge.

Perfect, that is what I needed to know.
Unfourtunaly the 2 mp3's I have, are from an old radio spoof, unavailable commercially or on cd, and any cassettes currently available, are all very poor.

So, basically, I need to make them "smell" less.... (good analogy!)

Thanks

I've used DART Pro 32 with good results, but be warned, it is HARD WORK.

Greetings!

Which old radio spoof? A lot of material has been collected on "best of" CDs, and some of those tracks may already exist in digital form. Example: a lot of the old National Lampoon Radio Hour material was released on a collection, and assorted other tracks wound up on comedy compilations.

WARNING Redneck material WARNING
Well, its "Brockett '99 , pretty much an Alberta, Canada kind of thing. A radio spoof of a native radio station in Brockett, Alberta.

Low brow, VERY redneck in nature. Very unlikely that it made it to a professional cd.

Worth a shot.

I have done a bit of restore work on some hard to find albums. Your best bet was mentioned above - get the best quality copy of it you can, record it into your machine and try to clean it up with a Sound Forge (my favorite), Cool Edit or other tool. Most have automated utilities to start the clean up, but you will still have to go in and check it manually.

Right. Which makes me think that somebody somewhere is offerring this service commercially. Anybody know who and where? I too have a bunch of tapes I need to salvage.

HAHAHA... just thinking of b--b-b-b-b-bbroocket 99 makes me laugh!!!!! "don't forget to bring the case of beer for condolences to the family!!!" hehe. I used to live in Lethbridge Alberta-- the brocket thing was made by a few Lethbridge community college students (one of which, is a weatherman on the local tv station now.. oops.. nobody was supposed to know that!)

Do you have a copy of Brockett99? or how about a copy better than mine? (Mine is ef'n terrible.)

Are u still in LA ??
I am in Calgary, and I am heading to LA sometime in February as my current contract is done at the end of the month. I have a few buddies down there going to school, so I expect to stay/party for about a week.

I used to have a copy, but since I don't have a cassette player... i threw it out many years ago.... I'm not in Leth anymore-- I've moved to Dallas Texas. =)

I recall finding the brocket 99 mp3 on someones web site once... you may want to try google or something and just search for it.. I recall the quality from the one on the web wasn't that bad (wasn't great, but hey, if it's a dub of a dub of a dub of a dub of a dub of a dub from radio.... what do you expect??)

btw: Why leave Calgary? How do you expect to party in Leth??? haha
