About 3 days ago my MK2 stopped responding to the Kenwood remote every other time I started the car. I though that the there may be something wrong with the battey so I put a fresh one in.

With my luck, that wasn't the solution. Today I have been unable to get the remote to work anytime I started the car (about 5 times throughout the day).

I am able to sort-of verify that the remote is working because I have a Sony "learning" remote for my home receiver and it is able to be programmed by the Kenwood for the Empeg.

I am fearful that there is something wrong with the Empeg itself. Has anyone had similar behavior in the past? I am running 1.02.

Thanks,

-Rob

Have you checked the battery in the remote?

Nick.

I don't want to get into a slanging match, but did you read my message? Have you checked the battery?

On several occasions I have bought a 'new' specialist type battery (i.e. not an AA, AAA etc.) and found it was dead.

So my question stands.

Nick.

I have opened specialist batteries too (especially from Radio Shack) and had them be dead out of the package. Like I said in the first post, it seems that there is some IR coming out of the Kenwood because of my Sony test.

If I remember correctly, motherboards most commonly use the same type battery for the bios. I will have to take one off a motherboard I know to work to absolutely verify that I bought yet another crap battery from Radio Shack. Or, maybe I will just find a multi meter. I know I have a few around here somewhere...

Thanks,

Does the remote work when the empeg is not docked?

I just plugged the empeg into the house. Remote works with neither of the two batteries I have. Will have to find a multimeter.

I had the exact same problem with my MK2 about a week or so ago. I never really noticed before because I never used the remote that often, until I bought a Pioneer Steering Wheel remote and it didn't work at all. I then tried my Kenwood remote and found that it worked sporatically (inside and outside).

I found that if I took the front face plate off, and held the Kenwood within 2-3" of the IR receiver in the upper right corner, it would work just fine. Once you moved out of that 2-3" area in front of it, it wouldn't work at all. I tried the same thing, changing the batteries a million times. Empeg thought it might be a remote control problem, so they generously sent me a new one, which acted in the same fashion.

Anyway, long story short, the problem turned out to be a flakey IR receiver on the empeg. I had to ship it back to Cambridge where Hugo replaced the IR receiver with one he had laying around (it would be interesting to see their shop out there). I got it back and it works fine now.

When I asked what specifically was wrong, this was Hugo's humorous note: "No idea what was wrong with it apart from it wasn't working and the new one does :)" hehe.

My recommendation would be to remove the front face plate and hold the controller directly up to the IR receiver and see if it works. If it does, you probably have the same problem I did. You should then email [email protected]. :)

I had this problem a couple of months ago, and contacted empeg (Rio) support. They suggested that it might be my developer kernel, so I put the standard kernel on. I just reproduced it again last night (after weeks of being OK.)

Just posting here to let everyone know that it's not the developer kernel, in case they ask. I'll contact support directly.

I too used my learning remote to test it, as well as OmniRemote on my Pilot. When it's not listening, none of them work, and it also happens both in my truck and in my home.

Regards,

-Trevor

I have had this problem every once in a while too, but for some reason, I can't reproduce it right now. Im not sure if I should contact support because if they pay to have it shipped to the UK and can't reproduce it, they might be slightly upset with me.

Oh by the way, my problem was sporatic as well. Some days it would work perfectly, sometimes it would only work at night (no daylight to interfere), sometimes it wouldn't work at all.

Just letting you all know.

Yes, this seems to be exactly what was happening. Nighttime seemed to be the time it would work. However, now it doesn't work at all.

I took the faceplate off and tried what you suggested and it still wouldn't work. I think I will have to send it in.

Thanks for the help,

-Rob

If the sun is hitting the IR sensor it may not work, it happens with most IR sensors on equipment. The sun interferes with IR signals if you shield the sensor from the sun does it work? Only working at night & sporadiclly kind of tips me in that direction. When I drive home from work the sun is at my back and the right angle to shine right on the face of my empeg & it won't receive the signal.

No, like I said, sometimes it worked during the day with sun beating down on the IR sensor, sometime it didn't. Sometimes it worked inside, sometimes it didn't. It was flakey. The IR receiver was replaced and everything is A-OK in every situation now.
