with all the remote duscussion I was curious if anyone has tried the newer style kenwood remote (see attached picture swiped from crutchfield)

it has the same functions as the credit card style one but it would be easier to find the buttons

if no one knows it won't work I think I will try one

Damn, that's a really sexy remote. I would rather have that then the current rio credit card remote that I have. I wouldn't mind the thickness, and it would feel a lot better to hold it while driving. I also like the layout of the buttons, instead of everything in an even row in a matrix like pattern like the rio cc remote.

agreed. Can anyone confirm it works with the Empeg?

Well it would with a kernel hack, at least. Frank?

But I agree with you guys, it's much more attractive than the current remote, and having actual button "feel" would be nice when driving, as I don't want to look down at the thing, and at night I can't see it even if I do. The old remote has 2 more buttons. I didn't bother to see which ones, but since thay are all empeg-defined it would matter all that much anyway.

Now this is something I'd get a new kernel for.

Well, there are 2 possibilities.
1) all Kenwood remotes share the same IR codes for the same types of buttons on their remotes
2) different Kenwood devices respond to different code sets.

As far as I can tell, either would be equally likely, leaving you with a 50/50 chance that the remote will work with the empeg. However, there were some differently labeled buttons on the new remote that aren't on the empeg/Rio remote, so I doubt thsoe would work either way.

Now, I believe empeg was going to offer support for multiple remotes in the new emplode. What would be really cool is if they could make it so the empeg could learn codes, like some universal remotes (like the Phillips Pronto). That, of course would make all this very easy

But this probably isn't possible.

With Frank's IR_Hack, you could write a shell script to do this. Use nested Picker menus to display the various functions, when one is selected, it uses IR trace to get the decimal code. Convert this to Hex, and put it in a new empeg_ircodes file. Go through all 24 buttons, get all new codes, and then cat it to /dev/ir. There's some subtleties, but it should be possible with or without emplode. Of course, emplode would offer a MUCH better UI.

Wow, fancy stuff!

Another way to get the hex codes would be to find what device the remote is usually used for, and see if they have it here.

Although those may be hex codes for the specific remotes themselves (like the Pronto or the Marantz

Be careful guys - I actually picked up a very semilar-looking kenwood remote from ebay at one point - didn't work w/ the empeg.. I'm still not sure if the remote was dead, or if they were incompatible though...

Also note that the rio remote has 24 buttons, that new one has 22. there aren't the ff & rw buttons so you lose a littel functionality.
Err, SB is there any chance, what with you being a big kid on the block and all, you could come up with a remote that was a little bit more stylish? maybe a set of DIP switches to select what you want to control hidden in the battery compartment? that would give you freedom to produce your remote for a wider range of your products.

I bought the remote all the buttons work. The buttons that are missing are the source buttons they have been replaced by a single button called source. I can switch between tuner, aux, and empeg buy hitting the source button more than once. The only thing I can't do is trun info on and off

There is an extra button called atten so if you wanted to use franks program you could make that button the one that turns info on and off

but out of the box it does everthing the credit card one does except turning off and on info

too bad empeg didn't use this one for the custom one this one is much easier to hold oh well

I got it at circuit city for 29.99 they are 24.99 at crutchfield

I bought the remote all the buttons work.

Could you go into a little more detail about what each button does?

Also, keep in mind that there is additional functionality in the new Rio remotes that the original Kenwood remotes lack -- like press-and-hold.

Please keep experimenting with your new remote and keep us posted on what you find out -- this could be a very hot topic!

it does the same thing as the credit card one except for switching on and off info

just think of it as the credit card one in a differnet package

it won't do anything the credit card one won't it's just easier to hold onto

Are you able to press and hold down to fast foward or rewind through songs? The old Kenwood was not able to do that, however the new Rio remote will.

Actually, some buttons on the kenwood can do press-and-hold (volume,ff,rew)., but most buttons only send IR-codes once. The IR-driver sends a button-down code when it receives the first code. when it doesn't receive that same code in the next 200ms, a button-up code is generated. This way the player app can set it's own repeat intervals and timeouts for press-and-hold. At least that's how I think the new code works. Thanks for the extensive documentation of the kernel source...

I too have been using this remote for quite some time now, at lease since last summer (2000). I had misplaced the original remote in the car for my Mk1 unit and went to Circuit City for a replacement (my only local Kenood dealer). Thew were out of the direct replacement but had the RC-600, the one we have been discussing. I asked if I could try it before I buy and viola! it worked! Then, after I received my Mk2 unit I began using the same remote for it. The only function I am missing is the INFO on/off toggle. I just have to hit a few extra keystrokes and it can be done just as easily, almost routine for me now. I would HIGHLY recommend upgrading your exsisting remotes to this one. I *HATE* using the old credit card style unit when I leave the RC-600 with my other unit. I need one for each of my EMPEG's!! Hope this helps anyone who is still unsure.

The only thing I can't do is turn info on and off

There is one more thing you can't do... in addition to not being able to cycle through the visuals, you can't cycle through the search modes -- i.e., search, append, insert.

Of course, you would have to have v1.1 installed to know that... :-)

I bought the remote (Crutchfield, $24.95 plus shipping if I recall correctly) and am very happy with it. I'm trying to think how I can relabel the buttons and the face of the remote so that the descriptions are more appropriate for empeg use. Any ideas?

Here's a thought: you know how the number keys on the empeg remote share space with the alphabet? That is, #2/abc, #3/def, #4/ghi etc., and that space is very limited. If you think about it, there is not one single function in operating the empeg that requires or is even able to use a numeric entry! So why not get rid of the digits printed on the number keys entirely and replace them with large, nicely readable "abc" "def" "ghi" etc.

Just a thought...

If you think about it, there is not one single function in operating the empeg that requires or is even able to use a numeric entry!

Actually, there is one: in the top level menu (Playlists, Shuffle, etc.) pressing 1 jumps to Playlists, 2 to Shuffle, ..., 9 to Sound. The Sound menu works the same way. On the other hand, in the Info and Visuals menus the alphabetical shortcuts are enabled. How's that for a consistent interface?

Sorry, I didn't make myself clear.

You could just as well press a button labeled "abc" to jump to playlists, and "def" to Shuffle as pressing a button labeled "1" or "2", but I guess it is more mnemonic to think of playlists as First in the menu, Shuffle as Second, etc..

I'd be content to give up the labels that are just numerals in favor of labels specifically designating other, more frequently used functions. We really don't need to have numbers per se on the remote -- it's not like we're dialing telephone numbers or setting tuner.... Uh-Oh... how DO we enter tuner frequencies once the mythical Mark Tuners arrive?
