This isn't my unit, but as a public service , I wanted to let folks know that a Rio Central is listed for sale on eBay. It's current sitting at 36 pounds or $63 with 40 hours to go.

Probably would work best for someone in the UK because of the shipping prices elsewhere...

Check it out,

That cheap? Aren't Centrals rather rare and nicely over equipped? Or are they easily replaced by open source mp3 server software running on a Pentium in your closet?

I agree, it is cheaper than I would have expected...The hard drive is almost worth that much...It's possible to replace the Central with a PC in the closet in some cases, but I don't think the solution is nearly as elegant...

Hopefully, someone from this board that has been looking for one will jump in and get it...

Thanks, Randy

That would be about right. i paid a fortune to have an HP entertainment centre shipped over. I'm keeping an eye on that central though.

How in the world could that cost $200 to ship to the US? USPS can ship that box to the UK for $92 Global Express Mail or $86 Airmail Parcel Post (which I'd use without hesitation).

Heck, I recently shipped a 25 pound box (heavier than the Central) to Mozambique using USPS Airmail Parcel Post for only $100. How can It cost twice that to send between two world leading, developed nations? Does the UK have more than one international shipping company to use?

Yes, but it looks like the seller is just doing it the easy way by taking it to the local post office and posting it there.

Unlike the US we don't have several different shipping offices in each shopping mall. If you want to just go to the local shops and post something like this then pretty much your only option is the post office.

If you want one of the other shipping companies to send it you either have to take it to one of their depots (which tend to be hidden in the middle of out of the way industrial parks) or get them to collect it. Many of them aren't interested in dealing with a one of pickup and if you work full time in an office it isn't always possible to arrange a pickup.

Looking at the Parcelforce (UK Post Office's parcel arm) website, the seller is merely passing on the true cost of posting a 10kg parcel to the US.

It looks like most of the other parcel services charge about £60-£90 for the same service, so the post office £110 option is expensive.

Was it anyone from this BBS who won the auction? I had a half-hearted punt at it but there were obviously others who wanted it more than I did!

I'm happy to say it did go to a board member.......namely me.

I've been trying to get one for a long time, but all the ones I've seen ended being too expensive. I don't reckon that £156 is too bad, especially for something as rare as a Central.

I'm going to drive up to Cambridge to pick it up on Wednesday. I'll report back and let you know how it goes.

Andy.
