I may be looking for a Hughes HDVR2. A lightning storm passed through and it appears the Tivo and DVD player are both dead.
Haven't confirmed that it is repairable in any way yet, but would be hoping to grab a working PSU.

Re the DVD player, it appears to have a fuse...could replacing that fix it? Will be stopping at RadioShack tomorrow.

On the off chance I have to buy new, what are my DirecTV Tivo/DVR options?

Assuming that you want HD programming, you have no DirecTV TiVo options. Your only recourse is to either get their shitty DVR, which you have to rent, IIRC, or move to cable and get a TiVo Series 3 or TiVo HD.

Well, I suppose you could get a TiVo and hook it up to the analog output of a standard DirecTV reciver, but there's no way to get HD programming that way.

It's also important to note that both HD TiVos currently are CableCARD devices, and that might be a problem if your cable company switches to SDV.

That's not fair. The HR2x had a bad start, but they're entirely usable and dependable now. Some features are better than tivo, and some are not. I have two HR20s and one HR21 on my account... no more tivos of any kind.

Most units that you purchase for $150-199 are leased units. You don't actually own it. The HR21Pro is ownable for about $400 if that turns you on.

DirecTiVos are cheap on ebay these days. I have been selling a few over the past month and the action in the auctions isn't so hot.

HD isn't a requirement for us, yet, at least not till the TV dies :-)

I may be in luck, my neighbour changed to Verizon TV a few months back and used to have DirecTiVo, hopefully it is gathering dust in the basement.

In case not, Rob, can you PM with what DirecTiVos you have for sale and asking prices?

Mean time I'll be buying a UPS

I may actually have an HDVR2 that I've been pulling parts from. I know it's somewhere, I just have to find it among the construction debris in my garage. I will give a look asap.

You can also just buy a power supply, but it's cheaper to buy a whole used unit off ebay.

I still have a TiVo. I switched to cable when my HDVR2 died. A good friend has the DirecTV DVR. I have a decent amount of experience with it, albeit not every day experience. While it is certainly better than it used to be, it's still pretty lousy. (Okay, it's adequate.) He has to power cycle it relatively frequently. The UI is still awful, IMO. But to each his own.

Having popped it open, and done the un-scientific sniff test, it does appear that the transformer* took the hit.
