Paul,
You must spend a lot of time in ebay, a "purple star". I don't even have a yellow one yet. Have you had any bad experiences?

No offence, but how many Empegs does one-person need?

Depends on the person. Paul has at least 3 that I know of. I have more than that. Some of my friends only have 1 and don't care to have another.

It all has to do with how paranoid you are about it getting stolen or damaged. Other factors include dedicating one or more for home/office use. Perhaps someone has more than one car and would rather have two empegs instead of one empeg and two sleds.

There's also that ``I don't have another $500-$800 to spend on one''. I'd like to have another, but there are other things that I want/need more. My hope is that if mine should ever break (knock wood), one of you folks that have multiple multiples would be nice enough to sell me one, if I was unable to find one through ``normal'' channels.

Valid reasons. I'm not one to criticize as I am into cars and have 11. And I have valid reasons for all 11 too.

Glad to know you still associate with us "1'ers"

It's a slow day at work, so I'll bite. What valid reasons do you have? A business fleet is the only thing I can come up with. Don't get me wrong here, I don't disapprove. I'd love to have about 4 cars, so it's not that much of a stretch to get to 11.

Here's the break down:

1, race car
1, show car
1, work car
1, for the wife
1, convertible
1, van (used as a truck)
1, van used for storage (could really get rid of this one.
1, 50’s car (to be restored)
1, rare 60’s (to be restored)
1, Off road car for the trails
1, work car recently wrecked in this stupid snow

and 4 motorcycles, three tractors and one ATV.

Damn I am nuts

Greetings!

"purple star" ... Have you had any bad experiences?

A few, but not as many as you would think. Out of the 1,100 plus transactions I have done, I can only think of about 10 that I regret and only 2 that were outright scams. (Note: My account is used by the whole family, so not all of these transactions were "stuff for me" or "stuff from me", but I did all of the ebay auction work.) Some of the regrets were people bidding and returning stuff that they claim was a problem - but I think they just changed their minds, some where the buyer was just annoying to deal with. All in all, not a bad ratio.

... how many Empegs does one-person need?

Well, I personally have three that I keep. My main player, currently suffering from deceleration trauma from a sled mishap / demo at the office. My spare player, currently travelling between the car and office. My home player, constantly connected to my PC and stereo, where I do my initial syncs and is the source of my testing and rsyncs. All of these are rsynced at 120GB, illuminated and digital out.

Working in IT and administration, I know the importance of having redundant hardware for "mission critical" applications - like car audio.

Paul has at least 3 that I know of.

I do, if I spot a bargain, buy additional empegs on ebay or the board. I do not normally keep them long, but resell them to people I know at the office or elsewhere. Over time, I think I have handled / owned about 11 players, if only for a short time.

...one of you folks that have multiple multiples would be nice enough to sell me one...

I am sure that could be arranged...

Whohoo! Now I can be your friend! I have more than one!

The only reason I wanted anotehr one was for backup - like I told Rob in support a while back - if I lost or broke mine, I don't know WHAT I would do - There would *NOT* be a 'sutiable' replacement if it wasn't an Empeg..

Sure, it's only 10Gb, but I don;t have that much music (Hey - 8Gb got me from Atlanta to Eugene and back, before hearing any repeats.) so I'm not too worried about that.

Me.

Greetings!

... Now I can be your friend! ...

HAHAHAHA! See The Rev's thread for that one...

... if I lost or broke mine, I don't know WHAT I would do ...

I know exactly what you mean. Given my natural inability to be graceful with delicate things (soldering irons, empegs not bolted down, heavy objects, drive tray screws, etc.), I need to have a spare in case I do something stupid and drop the player. It has happened before. This latest wasn't completely my fault - it was an accident where the player slipped out of the dock I was demonstrating.

I have gotten so spoiled by having all of my music in the car that I could not go back to any CDR based solutions. Even when I use the S50, stacked with as much memory as possible, it still is not enough. Greed, I guess. Or perhaps merely obsession...

... There would *NOT* be a 'sutiable' replacement ...

Agreed. I know that the folks @ empeg are working very hard on the next generation player, but I fear that it is at least a few years away. Even then, with the level of acceptance in the industry, would it be a stock item in a newly purchased car? I don't know.
