A close friend of mine (you know her on this bbs as kayakjazz) is in need of a computer.

It can be a pretty low-end machine (by today's standards) as it is an interim replacement for her laptop which got wrecked in transit during a trip to Alaska over Christmas. The kind of machine many of us on this bbs would use for a doorstop would be just fine.

Requirements:

Something around a gigahertz processor speed, say 733 MHz or better.

Enough RAM to run Windows XP. What's that, 256 MB?

On-board video and sound would be fine -- she doesn't play video games.

A reasonably fast (at least 16x) CD-ROM for ripping/encoding music.

40 GB hard drive or larger.

Some minimal tech support -- perhaps answer a few telephone questions about setup for this particular computer.

Located within 100 miles of Mountain View, California. (San Francisco area, sort of.)

Priced in the $50-$100 range, more if it includes the XP operating system and installation CD.

Monitor, mouse, speakers, and keyboard are *not* required.

I would make payment through PayPal; she would pick up the computer in person.

Can anyone out there help?

That's a doorstop? I still consider that a major *upgrade*.
