Someone please help me figure out why I can't post from my home machine. It's really starting to annoy me that I sometimes have to wait several days to make a post, because I can only do it from work, when I have time.

I've tried both DSL and 56k connections at home. And I keep getting "We cannot proceed." every time I try to post.

Any ideas?

What OS are you using? When I was using XP, it worked for a while right after I installed the OS, but then craped out on me... at the same time networking with 98 computers died too(I have no 2000 or NT machines to know it any networking ability existed there). There must be an issue with XP networking... I reinstalled it multiple times, and it would always die on me, and I couldn't post. It was really annoying when having networking parties.. we were limited to IPX games... (Gotta love Starcraft!) Now I am back to 98.

Hmm... is "we cannot procede" the exact error message? Is it a BBS error message? Does it say anything about being a proxy error message? Most people that have problems similar to what you describe are behind some sort of proxy server. (ISP's have been known to put in transparent proxys that try and hide, so you never know).

Try installing mozilla or another broswer of choice for your operating system and see if that clears up the problem

Are you running XP/IE6.x? (not from experience but ...) according to your settings you may need to add this BBS to your Tools->Internet Options ->Privacy [Web sites] ->Edit

"We cannot proceed." is the title of the error message I get from the BBS. There is more text that follows in the message, but I can't remember what it is. I run a dual boot at home: Win2K and Win98. The thought now occurs to me that I haven't tried it under 98, but even if it works it would be a pain to switch OSs simply to be able to post. I only use 98 for games that won't work on 2K.

If using a different OS doesn't work... perhaps I will drop in another browser and see if that helps.

There's a thought. I'm running Win2K -> IE 5.5... but I'll try that setting anyway, when I get home.

I get that error when I forget to disable my firewall software. I suppose that it's due to the fact that while the firewall is active, the BBS will not "see" a proper host IP address that the post originates from. Once I disable the firewall, the BBS allows me to make my post. After I'm happy with the post, I simply reactivate the firewall and all is well.

(ha ha, it just happened while I was trying to make this post, I just forgot what I was writing didn't I?)

I hadn't thought of that. In every instance that I've tried to post my firewall software was active - even when I used a backup 56k connection.

And viola! You are a genius sir. I thank you. This post was made from home successfully.

Nice to hear the problem was solved., though I think you should check the firewall settings. Disabling a fw just for posting a message isn't the nicest solution... Both with W2K+Zonealarm (dialup) and linux fw+local lan, I never had to change anything to allow posting.

I'm running Win2K + ZoneAlarm with a DSL connection. I don't know what I could change in ZA to allow me to post without disabling it.

Edit: Scratch that. I did a little more digging in the settings and now am able to post without disabling ZA.
