I am on my grandfather's computer and that DUN icon in the task tray showing the modem lights is somehow disabled. Does anyone know if there is a registry key that disables/enables it? The only way to disconnect is to close IE. Very odd and annoying.

Yeah, if, while you're connected, you go to the properties for the dial up connection (under Dialup Networking)-- there should be a checkbox "Show in tray while connected" or similar.

Once you're in dial-up networking go to the general tab, then to configure (whatever modem he is using), then the options tab under that. To be precise.

Yeah, I knew it was somewhere around there, but I'm using Windows XP at work, and Windows 2000 at home, and neither use Dialup Networking.

Thanks for the clarification.

No problem. I am still in the dark ages running Win98SE on both my home computers. I have a dial-up connection but very rarely have to use it since I have ADSL

Thanks for the suggestion... but it is checked. I even made a new connection and it's still not showing up.

So the little computers talking to themselves that should be blinking green doesn't show up at all? Does bringing up IE automatically connect him to the internet? And closing IE disconnects him?

Ok, I got out my Windows 98 Annoyances book. It can be one of either two options that has been selected. If he has TweakUI installed there is a place to disable different icons from showing.

I am leaving tomorrow morning and it doesn't bother my grandfather, so it's kind of a moot point. But, the little green computers do not show up. Connecting to the Internet does not automatically launch IE. Upon closing IE, you are promped to disconnect.

If it doesn't bother him. There is another place it could be disabled but he would have to have system policy editor installed which not everyone does. I haven't found where it is in the registry but it is probably there somewhere.
