it would be easier to test gps stuff if i could just hook up everything and select what i need. so i figure the onboard serial port plus 4 more is enough:
TSIP SVee6
NMEA SVee6
Magellan Gold
Delorme Earthmate
Motorola Oncore

The next version of gpsd will support the SVee6 in NMEA mode, by the way. Since the author of gpsd was the one who told me about the Palm 3 GPS units, I told him about the SVee6 units and he picked some up. So I figured at least this way it will "just work" when he gets it!

I assume that you realise that the empeg's USB port is slave-only?

And I'd do development of gps software directly on the empeg why? Jan was kind enough to make gpsapp_host, I'm happy to use it.

That's why I made the assumption...

I wanted it stated early in the thread before anybody less informed started to think that you were talking about empeg USB!

It might be as easy to get a USB hub and multiple USB-serial dongles though. (I assume that would work)

A cursory search tells me that [url=http://www.keyspan.com/products/usb/USA49w/]Keyspan] make one for $150. I'm guessing that any 4-port models are going to >= $100

By cheap, I take it you mean less than $139. Let us know if you find anything.

I have one IOGear GUC232A single port adapter. For a while I thought I saw these on-line for $19, but the lowest price I see now is $29. At $19, 3-4 of these might have been one of the cheapest option if you had a cheap USB hub kicking around.

This has been a frustrating area for me. I have an Intel (nee Xircom, nee Entrega) 4-port RS-232 hub that *may* work under Windows 98 that I can sell you!! (but it never really worked...)

$100 might be ok; For the moment I have money to blow, and I should blow it while I still have it.

$140 is pushing the "not worth that much" threshold.
