Can anyone recommend a good, freeware or shareware, multi-voice MIDI editor running on Windows? I want to transcribe orchestral muliti-part scores and play them back on a synth module, and also Civil war drum command patterns to record on CD.

I'm not certain it will still work, but I have a composition program called Encore that I used to use all the time in high school. I believe it could open MIDI as well as save files in the format. I'm planning on using it to make myself some ringtones.

The biggest problem is that the company that makes it doesn't seem to exist anymore, and the program is a bit old so I'm not certain about compatability with NT and later.. But the files are small and I could get it to you somehow. Maybe put it on my web space. Let me know and I'll try to find it.

Which civil war?

I tried a few of the shareware editors and finally just bought Cakewalk's ProAudio 9. It's really worth it.

Long time ago, I used the shareware "Noteworthy Composer". It can import from and save to.mid . Don't know if evaulation version will do so...

There's also Sibelius program, but it may be a bit overkill... ;-)
