I've been given an HP notebook to use for a while at work. Its a Compaq nc6000 and is about 2-3 years old I guess (Pentium M 1.7, 512MB RAM, 40GB HDD) but its never been used. I was sure these models came with built-in wireless but can't seem to see anything in device manager except for one of those yellow question marks next to 'Network Controller'. The driver is missing and nothing I do will get it to obtain it.

Anyone know what this device might be? Could it be the wireless adapter?

Does it have a "centrino" label somewhere? then it's probably the intel pro wireless device. Try downloading the drivers from the intel site...

My work has a couple of those floating around. In fact a fellow IT employee here has one, but she is out on vacation today. I will find out tomorrow if someone doesn't beat me to it.

Yes it has an 'Intel Centrino' sticker on it... thanks for the suggestion about the Intel site. Will try now.

(I should add that I don't have the HP CDs so I'm pretty much stuck if that doesn't work)

Quite often, you can get the properties for the device. Right-click it in Device Manager, choose Properties and go to the 'Details' tab.

Under Device Instance Id, you'll see a string something like this:
PCI\VEN_11AB&DEV_4362&SUBSYS_81421043&REV_15\etc.

Go to http://pci-ids.ucw.cz/iii/ and look up the four digits after 'VEN_'. In this example, they're 11AB, which is 'Marvell Technology Group Ltd.' Clicking on that entry will take you to a page where you can look up the device ID (4362 in my example).

This'll display the model number, etc., of the device, e.g. '88E8053 PCI-E Gigabit Ethernet Controller'

From there you can drill down into the subsystem ID, but this is not normally necessary. Note that if you do, you need to word-swap the digits (i.e. in groups of 4) of the subsystem ID. In my case, 81421043 translates to 1043:8142, which is 'Marvell 88E8053 Gigabit Ethernet controller PCIe (Asus)'.

Which is actually what my example device is. You should be able to do the same to find yours.

Are you familiar with linux? Then try booting a knoppix CD, the intel wireless cards are supported. Perhaps only to get the model of the card, just watch the hardware detection while booting the CD. It's worth a try...

Had to do exactly this today when I had to install a vanilla copy of XP on a new Dell box (it came with XP64 which Avid doesn't like). I got everything bar one device driver reinstalled which unhelpfully showed up as a 'PCI Device'. I used http://www.pcidatabase.com/ which worked really well.

I have to say when I saw a vendor ID of 0x8086 I knew it had to be intel. It's like a personalised licence plate for your car!

Pity. The 2200(A)BG works just fine "out-of-the-box" with most modern Linux distros.

Even though that is a big DL. You want it! The intel drivers and config software is so much better than the pucky most OEM's seem to ship.

Thanks for that tip, Roger! That's very useful, as I very often get devices on new OS installs that don't get their drivers installed, and I can't tell what they're supposed to be. I'll be using this in the future!
