I want to say Winston Churchill, as I think I remember that he got an honorary US citizenship at some point, but I can't find any reference to him and the Louvre.
(And I assume that ``their'' instead of ``his or her'' isn't some sort of weird clue and only a mistake.)

There's a coincidence - I came across an article on this very point the other day. To quote:
Beyond the world of linguistics, it isn't generally known that singular they was once accepted usage in English writing and speech. There is no evidence that speakers of Middle English and early Modern English used gender-inclusive he as we know it today. In fact, Bodine claims, "English has always had ... linguistic devices for referring to sex-indefinite referents, notably the use of singular 'they' (their, them)" .
Something else to blame the Victorians for, it seems...

I cringe everytime I have to type "he or she." Partly because it's so much easier to say "he" but that's not an option in the current Politically Correct world we live in and partly because "they" won't fly with the Grammar Police.

Strunk and White (4ed. pp60-61) say that it's a no-no. They don't like 'he or she' either, and point out that using 'he' may be considered offensive. They then come up with various convoluted ways to avoid it.

I noticed it immediately in the original post but figured I'd let Bitt do his thing. Usually you can rewrite a sentence so that "they" becomes acceptable and you don't need "he or she", but unfortunately in this case I don't see a way around it.

Personally, I just use ``he'', unless there's no way it could be male. (``As a graduate of Bryn Mawr, he was widely desirable in the workforce'' just seems weird.)
(BTW, when I went to Yahoo to find a women's college after I remembered that Vassar has been co-ed since the '60s, I found that in their listing of 71 colleges, two are in Raleigh, not counting the other one that became a girls' prep school just a few years ago. Does that sound high to anyone else?)

Churchill's A History of the English-Speaking Peoples is both good and quite lengthy. I've never been fond of his fiction though.
