My car was in the shop, so I figured I'd treat myself to a little empeg upgrading... Decided to throw on Amursfoot (sp?) build of 3.0 (Alpha 8, right?)...

The upgrade took, literally, hours to complete... (Maybe around 4?)

The part that took the lion's share of the time was the "pumping partition" part...

When I connected hyperterminal during boot it seems to hang at the following:

change_root: old root has d_count=1
Trying to unmount old root ... okay
Freeing unused kernel memory: 4k initBUG IN DYNAMIC LI

Anyone know what BUG IN DYNAMIC LI means? Is that even a complete error code, or did it break before it finished spitting it out...?

I seem to remember having "pumping partition problems" many other times... I replaced this hard drive a few months ago (in case some of you were thinking that might be it). But in all fairness, I somehow also remember that everytime I had this problem, putting a new HDD in solved it... This empeg has seen at LEAST 5 drives in 2 years, however... I'm too broke and too disapointed to want to believe it's yet ANOTHER dead HDD... Yes, I've tried ALL differant brands/sizes of disks in case you were wondering...

Can anyone offer me any suggestions?

You guys are usually right on top of things... Hoping it's just one of my haven't-done-it-in-a-while-so-i-forgot-something-stupid errors...

Thanks in advance guys!

Joey DIJulio

Post the full log. Every Hyperterminal capture I see from a player booting seems to get totally munged and missing characters so that "half" error might be due to that.

Post the whole log and if you can get something like TeraTerm or CRT use it instead.

You can also try the upgrade again. It can't hurt doing it twice or even 100 times.

Edit:
4 hours is very long for an upgrade. A dodgy drive could esaily slow down the pump process. It takes a while but maybe 10-15 minutes and not 4 hours.

The hyperterminal capture looks OK and there aren't any errors which point to it being a drive problem either.

Might be best to go back to 2.00 final. First thing I'd try is another upgrade but to 2.00 final instead. If that's OK, then try 3.0a8 (which I've had no major problems with).

The error might be something like "BUG IN DYNAMIC LINK LIBRARY" or something like that. It's definitely not a complete error. I grepped the kernel source for for the string and didn't find anything and it doesn't appear the player has started yet, so I'm not sure where it's coming from.

I assume you can't Ctrl-C and get a terminal prompt or anything like that?

In absence of any other ideas, try the upgrade (or downgrade really) again.

Man... It's been some time... I didn't even think of the control-c.... I figured it would be dynamic link library, but wasn't positive... but if a grep of the kernel yeilded nothing - then i REALLY am clueless as to what it might be... I'll try the downgrade to 2.00 final and see how that goes... I'll report back in a few

Wish me luck!

Verify hard drive cable isn't loose and all the other FAQed 'No Hard drive found' causes. You might also want to verify the integrity of the build that you used somehow, although the 4 hour upgrade does suggest a hardware issue.

I agree it's worth checking the cables etc although the boot log doesn't seem to show any problems with detecting the drive. Not that that is definitive of course.

We'll see how the upgrade goes. Any ideas where the error could come from? About the only other place is the bootloader that I can think of.

Oh my... Any ideas?

Also, if an upgrade is taking forever, I wanted to know if it is SAFE (with 100% certainty) to just pull the power on the empeg, to reseat cables, etc and start all over? Or could that render my empeg inoperable? (Meaning I should just wait it out and then try again 4 hours later... Just seems like a long time to wait for nothing...)

I'll try reseating cables now in the meantime...

Thanks,

Joey

All of that "garbage" is something crashing. For that to happen you've got dodgy hardware somewhere.

The empeg should handle this fine. Absolute worse case could be corrupting the harddrives if they were read/write when you pull the plug. And worst case result of that would be reformatting the drives and reloading your music.

Basically you can't render it inoperable since the bootloader will always let you recover. I would have no problem doing it myself.

If you can get to a shell prompt (and it would seem you can't), I'd suggest an fsck of the drives

Okay, we'll I'm trying once again... I took the empeg apart, made sure the cables were nice n' firmly connected... Giving it another whirl...

I'm curious though, and maybe this is s stupid question... But this could all be due to a bad cable couldn't it? I ask because I'm starting to wonder if I *really* had five (5) bad hard drives or maybe just one (1) bad cable... How would I go about getting a replacement cable if this indeed is the throne in my side...

Or any other ideas are good to...

Yes very good chance it could be a cable. It would definitely be worth trying. It looks like you only have one drive. If so simply try the other connector on the cable.

Drive errors usually look a little bit different since the drive won't even let the empeg read the data if they know they're dieing and reports bad sector reads etc. In your case data is getting corrupted somewhere. This could be in any number of places:

The drive
The drive cable
The empeg RAM
etc and also any connections PCB, cables etc in between.

You can get cables from Eutronix (link at the top) or I believe Rob Schofiel (schofiel on the BBS) is offering them soon (if not already).

Also, read this if you haven't already.

All those things can apply to your situation.

Haha... Yep, that picture looks JUST like my cable...

Funny part is - The cable I have now IS a replacement cable sent to me by empeg support many moons ago, hmmm...

I guess I'm just rough of my gear. Or maybe its the two 15" subs... Or maybe it's both... For my sake/sanity, I should just stick with buying everything "industrial"... I have a horrible habbit of breaking everying <insert argument for better/stronger/hardend built products> I buy, so maybe I shouldn't be surprised....

I'll go ahead and see about getting a new cable and see what happens... Although, my eye has wandered over to the "pumping partition" window on my third go at it (after reseating my bad cable and using the other connector) and lo' and behold it appears to be going a bit faster...

Hmmm... I'll cross my fingers and maybe get a new cable as reassurance...

Thanks for all the help Shonky

Joey

PS: I haven't had my eye on the forum that much lately... Any talk about a Beta (or even a new Alpha if I dare ask) for v3?

I guess when Trillian (my IM app of choice) started revving up and finally released their highly anticipated v3 (Alpha, Beta, and Final) of their software I pig-headedly assumed that I'd find something going on with the v3 work for the empeg... Maybe not? Maybe not where I've been looking?

Yeah, what he said. I'd try a RAM test next (search the faq for "ctrl-t" for directions)?

It's an easy test to do but I don't ever recall anyone ever finding dodgy RAM during that test. I would expect RAM to die early in it's life OR last a long time.

Can't hurt to try and faulty RAM could easily cause these sorts of problems. I doubt he would have got that far into the upgrade if the RAM was faulty though.
