My 250Gb drive woes

Well, I thought the solution to my problems was to do away with my old drives and install one 250Gb Western Digital. So, went through the process, double checking cables etc and all seemed fine.
builder_bigdisk_v10.upgrade went on, did its pumping and got to the stage that the waiting message kept repeating on the serial port. All good so far.
Did the car_2.01_hijack_v9.upgrade, and it appeared to work fine as well. Pump completed and it eventually rebooted to 'End of Playlist'
The problem is that when I connect using emplode or jemplode I get zero free space.
A ctrl-C lets me move around the usual filesystem.
Any thoughts on what might be wrong, or what further info it would be useful for me to provide?
[update - emplode gets upset now, but I can still connect using jemplode, however I get a 'there isn't a file with FIDS 2 on this device' message. Trying to Sync anyway tells me there is an issue and fsck should be run, so I'm off to do that now!]

interestingly it may well be the old IDE issue or something else -
No primary hard disk
No secondary hard disk

There's nothing wrong with that log you posted -- it identifies the drive just fine. The data test messages ARE ONLY MEANINGFUL WHEN SOMETHING ELSE FAILS DURING THE KERNEL INIT, which was not the case here.
Ross Wellington has a *massive* thread on this BBS about his 250GB drive adventures, and how he worked around various software limitations with them. Recommended reading.
A ReserveCache=nn line is almost certainly required to get them to work correctly with the player software.

yep - I went through that entire thread and the info you popped on there made me think this should just work. At risk of sounding thick, is there a way to write the reservecache into config.ini without using emplode/jemplode - as I can't get a sync to work. [edit - This thread has info on that] fsck won't work either as ro and umount can't find any devices to work with. I really appreciate any thoughts here....

Another update - swapped the hard drive onto the last connector. Rebuilding, and this time I get the Writing inode tables message on the serial port. Don't recall seeing that last time, so this is a step up. And the 29789 number sounds like the same as Ross, so I'm cautiously optimistic...

Looking grand - popping a quick 40Gb on overnight to see what happens.
Wonder if the old drives were okay the whole time. Ah well - the new one was cheap and it should do for a while.
Thanks Mark -I have gone with a reservecache of 10. Didn't seem to be any hard and fast rules on this.

Mmmm.. I do hope you're having fun on the leading edge of things here! Someday I might grab a 250GB drive and try it, but for now mine are all much smaller and of late tend to have no spinning magnetized thingies.  Cheers

I think if I was just running them in the car I would be tempted by the solid state side of things, however I have this nice dock sat right next to my desk at home, so I might as well have all my music beside me :-)

Hi,
The 250 GB Drives have worked very well for me. I have used 2 of them per player. I am currently making a master set that I will copy between my empegs.
I am loading the last 50GB of my 415GB music list on it this weekend. This will leave me an additional 50GB (465GB is the total you get with 2 250 GB drives after and player software formatting) for future music.
The reason why it has taken me a long time to report back is that I re-formatted my complete collection and have have bits and pieces of time to complete the effort.
One way around the memory error that I had early on in the player was to remove content in the Tags. The way I did this was to use Tag and Rename, select the files, right click, and Edit Tags In Selected Files (second selection down), click on Select All, Clear All, and Save. This removes all tag information.
I think this helped some and I either had to lose more cache or remove cache content. I chose the latter, maybe this is not how it works at all, but, it did seem to solve my problem even after using the reservecache in config.ini (the mem err still happened occasionally), I haven't seen it since, maybe just coincidence....
I know, I know, I lose the search capabilities as well as other goodies, but, what it all comes down to is listening to what I like which is arranged in a tiered format anyway. It is much better tha listening to FM. The majority of the files are native .wav files.
The tiering I selected looks like this:
Rock Music

Lots of sorted directories, you get the idea.
When the player sees no Tag information, it reverts back to the file name which has the Track #, Title, Artist, and Album name. Which is all I really want anyway.
I also have a ReserveCache=15 in my config.ini too which helps reserve the space for the copy of the playlist it loads.
So far, I have not had a problem with over 32,000 Files.
I wonder what it will do with a 750 GB drive interfaced to it... Hmmm? Yeah, I bought one to try it with, I don't know what will happen with it. Next project, for a home unit, maybe, time permitting.

Yeah - in going through the different messages each time (or different lengths of time each message came up) I think I must have a dodgy middle connector on the cable. Shouldn't be a problem - this 250Gb drive should do me for years (unless PaulWay and SXSW become even more prolific:-)

Well - it'll be slow but it all looks good. Halfway through the As (500 songs worked fine) so I'll finish the As and the pop B to E on in one batch.
As long as it all completes in time for the Cambridge trip I'm happy

Hi,
I have loaded large GB sessions before. Over 10 hours straight without powering down the drive. Not recommended for drive reliability but, it will do it. I prefer 10 to 20GB sessions to allow everything to cool in between sessions.
With Ethernet interface, it will load around 2.5GB/hour hours. USB, well now, that's just real slow. Believe me, I loaded my 120GB drives with that and Ethernet is MUCH FASTER.
If you think about it, that is pretty good reliability for the Empeg and host system to sustain the 2.5GB/hour transfer. The host has a Seagate 750GB 7200 RPM ATA-6 drive with a SATA to IDE adapter and still sustains the transfer without errors.
