As I'm just about ready to get a professional to install the empeg
in the car (at long last!), I would like to get as much extra stuff
done at the same time as I can while the dashboard is in pieces.
One obvious thing to anticipate is the wiring for the microphone.
It would be fun to use it as an input to the voladj kernel before
its eventual use for voice recognition. Is the recommendation
for the latter application likely to be to have the mic mounted
up by the driver's visor? If so, what cable should I run there?
Is the socket on the back of the car sled mono or stereo? I know
the early experiments used a fancy directional microphone; did
that need power as well as signal?

I know that this is still a work in progress. Until the VR package is selected, I do not think any recommendations have been made for a specific microphone manufacturer or model. What I did in my install was to run the microphone connection wire to somewhere "convenient", so that I could get to the wire / jack from wherever / whatever microphone I get later on.

Yes, that's what I was planning to do. But what cable to use?
It would be annoying to have the foresight to run, say, mono
shielded cable and then discover that what was actually required
was stereo plus power.

I presume it is safe to assume that whatever comes out of the
sled's microphone jack is all that is required, so I suppose
the question really comes down to: what is the microphone
socket? It looks like a 3.5mm stereo jack.

It's a mono 3.5mm jack, with power (~3v) on the tip to power an electret if required.
