Hm. I have recently installed emplode on my girfriends win95 machine, but it does not work over USB. The FAQ says this is because win95 does not support USB. This is not true... I downloaded USB drivers from the net somewhere, and it correctly detects the machine as a "Rio car". It does however not install any drivers. I guess the setup.exe is a sort of a zip/tar file that contains the drivers (win98 drivers usually work), but I can't seem to get them out of there...

Any tips?

And tell me, just how many USB devices have you been able to use successfully with those drivers? Whenever I've been told by people that they've added USB drivers to Win95, they always follow it up with "and it's really flakey, I've had lots of problems with it."

The fact is that the Win95 operating system was not designed to support USB at all, ever, and any way of getting USB to work on top of Win95 is a complete kludge no matter how you slice it.

I recommend using ethernet instead. You're also welcome to see if you can get one of those USB-to-ethernet convertors working under 95, best of luck.

Huh, from my memory USB didn't even work right until the seccond release of windows98... If you get it to work with 95 I'll be impressed...

Sorry, can't use Ethernet :-) I'll have to use serial then... *sloooooow*
USB under win95? a scanner, a camera and a mouse have been sucessfully used on that computer.
USB-to-ethernet converter would require unnecessary amounts of money.
So basically, your answer to my question is "I don't know"?

Did you try plugging the empeg into the computer first, or did you install emplode first? You should install Emplode before plugging the player into the PC.

I guess it's possible that Emplode might just skip the USB driver part of the installation if it detects a 95 system, in which case that wouldn't even help.

Yes, seems like it skips the install. Windows recomends "reinstalling the drivers". Maybe somabody with win98 could email me the actual files?

I'm sure that I'll catch flack for this suggestion....but if your friend's machine can support it, why not just upgrade to Win98SE?

Can you actually still buy Win98 somewhere?
It would probably be a waste of money as well...

I'm sure it's because upgrading an operating system is a time-consuming pain in the rear.

I've always been of the "if it works don't fix it" mentality... However I think at this point there are enough general benefits to running 98 or 2000 to outweigh the pain of upgrading a 95 box.

Just stay away from XP for a while.

Some of us still use Win98 and Win98SE. I have both. That's another reason I will never buy a ready built computer, I want to be able to run whatever OS on it that I want.

Jane, you can still find Win98SE out there. I could even send you the disc, but then that would be piracy wouldn't it

I remember from my time in the army... we had some software that did not work under winNT, and win95 never got security clearance, so we ran win 3.11 on those powerful computers, and that was really good. very fast and never any trouble.

Marius (Escort Cab + Mark II)

Ps. do you have emplode + USB installed on your win98? Could you look under device manager at the riocar device and see hwat files it uses?

I have a copy of Win95B with USB support. Don't know if that was MSs idea or someone else's. But I don't use that. I'm still using Win98SE myself, along with Win2K (can you say dual boot?). I have a few old games that I like to play once in a while that simply will not function under Win2K.

I'm not going to be much help. I looked under device manager and the riocar is not metioned but I have had it hooked up under USB, serial and ethernet on here.

How much is unnecessary amounts of money? Realistically, using serial to upload music to it is not feasible...

My USB->Ethernet adaptor cost approximately $45, two years ago! I don't know if it works under Win95, but then, you wouldn't catch me using Win95!

There was also recently a post (here) with a link to a company selling a USB->Ethernet adaptor for $4.99! I realise you are not in the US, but realistically, you're going to be able to pick up an adaptor for not much more than $15-20 equivalent pricing these days. Compared to the cost of an empeg, that's nothing!

And USB really, really doesn't work, in the way that I define that word, in Win95. Well done for getting three things operating, but I wouldn't expect that to be the slightest guarantee that a different device will work. Including a USB->Ethernet adaptor.

Incidentally, you'll be able to pick up a dedicated network card for less than the cost of a USB one, that will work in Windows 95, and be a much more elegant solution. My friend recently bought a Netgear FA311 for £11, and I've bought unbranded Realtek cards for £3.50 new.

Cheers,

A.

Windows 95 USB is a huge pain in the backside. There's a list of issues with it longer than the average roll of toilet paper - and that's MS's issues, not ours!

It can sometimes be made to work with any given USB chipset and any given product. Making it work generically is something I've seen few device vendors claim. We simply don't support USB on Windows 95 on any present or future applications period.

98 is the baseline for almost everything these days, and I really wish we didn't have to support that either! Nonetheless, we do.

Rob
