I sent this to support@empeg a couple days ago; haven't had a response yet, so I figure I'd get some of ya'lls opinions.

I did play around with the options a bit, to make sure the cell phone mute wasn't a problem, which it wasn't (it's set to Never mute).

Hey guys,

Last night I finally got around to upgrading to 1.02 developer. I kept
forgetting to bring the player back to the car, and when I did this
afternoon, I noticed that there was no audio being put forth from the
unit. Everything else was ok, the boot, the upgrade, and so on.

I did notice that when trying to change the volume when the empeg was in
the Jeep, it went VERY VERY slow... if I held down the left arrow for like
3 seconds, it would very slowly drop all the way to - infinity (mute).
And the player even locked up after tinkering with it a little while.

I tried powering it up from home, it booted fine.. but again, no output
from the audio outs.

Whenever I change the volume, it spews out those i2c: Failed to receive
ACK for data errors.

I wanted to send you this before I tinkered with it anymore (going back to
1.01, etc, to see if you have any idea what the problem is.

Interesting. Looks like a really odd hardware problem to me. I'm surprised you haven't gotten a reply from support yet.

Whoops. I thought I sent it Wednsday. My bad. :)

Anyway, I got a response this afternoon.. It sounds like it might be a bad DSP (what would cause that spontaneously anyway?)

I still have yet to try to install 1.01 and see if it "fixes" the problem.

Well, there's either something wrong with the I2C drivers or with the DSP itself (crystal gone bad, maybe). We had a couple of mk1s fail in this way, but I don't think I've ever seen a mk2 suffer like this before.

If it has to come back I'll fix it quickly :)

Yeah, it looks like that's the problem. I tried going back to 1.01 Consumer then Developer and still had the same problem.

I've been in contact with support@, I should be getting faxed an invoice so I can return it to ya'll.

What is the difference between a no-slip knob and a regular knob (no bad jokes please!) ??

The "fins" which hold the knob to the shaft are thicker and shaped differently. It's essentially a tighter fit.

When I got my replacement knob, it also came with a small rubber washer. However, I didn't know what to do with the washer and it didn't seem to be necessary. So I left it off. The new knob works great.

OK, fair enough, I guess I will have to wait for v1.1 for the volume knob polling update, I hate turning the knob twelve times to turn the volume down when leaving the car.
Or I could bastardize an old Mechanix or Construx rubber wheel to allow for a larger diameter turning point, with less finger slip on the knob, because we all want a fim grip on our knobs. (OK, that was a little too much, but I couldnt help it!)

The rubber part fits inside the knob - I'm surprised it works without it. It does make it quite difficult to fit, though, so if you're getting good results then go with it.

By the way, I have a bunch of new knobs with me for the meet - if you want a good knob at the meet, I'm the guy to see. OK, I'll stop now.
