You cant reliably test a battery by using a multimeter. That puts no load on the battery. Also, even at 2.7V the battery is considerably drained. Also, the symptom of it working for a few minutes and then dying really does point towards a battery. Search as many threads about batteries as you like, and you will see that time and time again, it is the battery.
