The Phillips spokesman claimed it was added because their test group (mostly Joe Consumer types) were confused without it.

We added it because it looked groovy Because we actually use this product ourselves, we also made it scroll quite fast.

This sort of thing probably won't get addressed right away because we have some more far reaching plans for the UI in the slightly more distant future.
