With the cd included with the unit can I just reinstall the player software without wiping the hdd and losing the music ?

Yes. It is similar to the car player in this respect.

When you insert the CD it asks you if you want to either upgrade the software or "restore to as new". The latter option is the one that erases the music too, quite similar to the builder image on the car.
