I use MythTV for all my recording needs and I love it, but it's certainly not even close to "consumer" level yet in terms of setting it up. Setting it up is a royal pain in the butt due to different hardware even with Jarod's guide.

However, I have seen digital TV recorders for sale here in Australia (i.e. DVB) for about A$4-500 with an 80GB drive. No TV guide or anything I assume. Just like an old school VCR except recording digitally instead of to a tape. Can't find a quick link at the moment though.

If you can use ATSC (US Canada) or DVB (most other places) I think you're in with a chance.
