Really recent Linux distro's already "quirk" those drives by disabling APM (Advanced Power Management) on them using hdparm.

The best solution apparently is the wdidle3 MS-DOS utility from WD, with which the "Timer can be set from 100 ms to 25.5 seconds, in 100ms increments", as well as disabled completely.
