Ok, this is on the fringe... but I'll put it out there anyway.
empeg+802.11+hijack = empeg gang.

Could there be an app that broadcasts the name and IP of a player and is picked up by other empegs. Then when driving down the road you can see who else is out there, what they are playing and tune in?

I have a couple friends that have these and we're all going on a 5 hour trip and it's be cool if we could share our MP3s and create a master list while driving.

Maybe not make a "master list", but at least have someone DJ to al l the others - with the ability to store the file being broadcast if we like it.

I'd been musing about putting an AP in my trunk and now you've given me even more ideas.

If I had an AP in the trunk, then while caravaning on a long roadtrip, a laptop in the other car could pull an audio stream from my empeg.

I had thought about extending hijacks streaming mode with some (udp) broadcast capabilities,
but never got far enough to write a "receiver".

Streaming what you play to all your friends ?
On the road ?

No problem

A friend and I had talked about this, though not seriously. If we could all harness the collective processor power of our empegs, imagine what we could do!

I think the suits at SonicBlue might want to know what step #2 is! They sure couldn't figure it out!

Actually, I was just thinking about using the existing interface to allow each person to pull their own stream from httpd.

Of couse, I don't ever go on cross-country caravaning trips. If I do get all the stuff setup, I'll have to plan a road trip just to try it out.

The Profit part is always the hard part. Had these things been avilible for the cost of a high-end head unit (with tuner) I think they would have been a smash hit. It wasn't until they for down to head-unit prices that there was a mad rush, but that unfortunately was the close-out :-(

I hope we/Sonic Blue revisit the EMPEG (pretty much as is) i a few years when the tech is really cheap.

I also had thought about this, but I don't know of any access points that can be hacked to be used as a receiver for wardriving.

Wardriving software normally talks to the wireless card (PCI or PCMCIA) directly to scan for wireless networks in range. You'd need an access point that could somehow take commands over ethernet to do this, and I don't believe this is possible with any APs today.

Don't use an AP. Use one of http://www.linksys.com/products/product.asp?grid=33&scid=36&prid=432 these!

Indeed there is a lot of potential to putting in wireless. Like being able to sync when you pull in your driveway, wardriving, p2p tunes sharing.... OOOH new idea... finally use the mic to do car-to-car bridging. Now everyone can be in the same conversation!!!, NFS mount the other empegs' hd's, etc.

It doesn't make any difference whether you use an AP or a bridge - you still, sadly, won't be able to use either to warhack, as neither (I believe) will pass information on what SSIDs it can see to a connected device.

Both will work fine for simple wireless communications between car and house, however. An AP will give you slightly more flexibility at an increased cost.

I beleive you to be correct. I think you atually need a card in the PC so you can see everything. Whereas the adapters, a/p's will only put out packets... Still I have a laptop in my car for my ECU... :-)

I have had my empeg for about 8 months now, and there has only been 2 times when I have known that a car next to me has had an empeg. But I would like to be able to trade all of the mp3s on both devices. So, just by being in range of someone with a AP/Card in their empeg I could get all of their songs, and they could get all of mine. The RIAA wouldn't be too fond of this idea, but the chance of the few cars with WiFi ever comming within 300 feet of one another isn't very likely anyways.

I think the people sitting behind me in traffic would get mighty pissed off if I was just sitting there, scratching my ass, for 10 to 20 hours uploading music. They'd really flip when I told them I'd be another 10 or so to download the other guy's tunes.

Or I suppose I could get that other empeg hooligan to follow me home and then park, out in the cold, in my driveway until the transfers were done.

Hmmm.. Then again, maybe I'll stick with buying CDs and ripping them myself. Seems faster and more economical. Haha.

Perhaps empegs should try to register with an empeg distributed network at every opportunity and then have a Serendipity mode that will fetch songs that you might like from the network.

To keep the music people happy, Serendipity would only use tunes that didn't have the 'Copyright' wendy flag set.
