Hmm ive just been thinking how nice it would be to have a decent portable player

My perfect portable would be.

Plays mp3, ogg, etc
size of a minidisc player ( preferably same weight )
Storage upto 512 CF card + internal IBM microdrive or equivalent
Good analogue stage - capable of driving my heftier headphones.
sony stick battery - good size and last for ages.
10mb nic or firewire / usb2

runs linux and made by the guys you know who i mean

Drool.

never gonnahappen but it would be nice

Plays mp3

Perhaps you should search the BBS for "Pearl", which fits your description almost exactly. Quite a lot of your description even applies to the Other Project (of which Mr Ballard has mentioned the real codename, though everyone seems to call it "Slicky" anyway), which is an awful lot smaller than a minidisc player.

never gonna happen

The current managers on those projects aren't quite so pessimistic...

Do we have an outline of the probable features for this ?

I've seen mention of it around but only vague stuff like
"smaller than an ipod"
"we have the featureset"

just curious as this would be awesome, but i would need to start saving for it.

Cheers

Not really the ultimate but I would buy a 2.4ghz (802.11b) wireless mp3 digital receiver (in beltpack)
or for that matter just a digital beltpack headphone (earbud) receiver - for good quality (perhaps a bit of a buffer) with a decent range, Like most Wireless Access Point's do have, so I can use the terrabyte on my home network, and when the kids have their MP3's blasting in their room I can still listen to my music or mow the lawn, this would also enable Internet Radio Stations --- Can somebody make one for me.

I have bought that many wireless headphones, the best one I bought was the Jensen Beltpack but even the range on that was pathetic, (anybody know a good 900mhz RF Linear Amplifier solution:-)

Ultimate - Does everything an empeg does and is also a wristwatch. Oh, 500 Gig storage and 2 year battery life.

This can be done with a PocketPC, an 802.11b (or better)network a Windows PC and a program from 40th floor software: http://40th.com/w32/

The interface is a little quirky but it really works.
