Hi there,

after some experiences with Bluetooth, I tried something new: GPSapp. Just after deselecting (!) some protocols in my GPS-mouse it worked. But I cannot use the maps, because I live in germany. I send out my car's position at http://www.corradovr6.de or more detailed at http://tracking.rowi.net. For this I found a source where I can get (officially!) the cities and their names in a format like this:

cityname (detailed!), lat, long

So I cannot use maps but it should be possible to show the nearest city with the direction in GPSapp. Does anyone need such data? At my own server I have in a mysql-database the whole coordinates of all the major and minor cities (what's the differnece to the word town?) from Germany, GB, Netherlands, Belgium and all around us :-).
Please don't request the whole databases for fun, it's a huge amount of data. Maybe it could be implemented in future releases of GPSapp?

regards,
Rolf

Sorry to thread hijack here, but I just noticed your bluetooth link on your sig. Did you try connecting the AP to the empeg? I've noticed some AP's support the serial port protocol, so in the long run my thought is to connect my empeg to the AP through ethernet, and then have the AP connect to my phone's serial port. This would allow for the empeg to be the answer/end button and display the caller ID information. Considering I've never physicaly seen a bluetooth AP, I'm not sure if this will work, but it seems like it should.

To be on topic, GPSapp has a specific data format that you can see if you use the python scripts and mapsonus. It probably wouldn't be too hard to hand modify the mapsonus html with your route if you're only doing it for one route and mainly as a novelty. It won't be that usefull, but for a long car trip it might be fun to see how far you have to go and such.

Just to be offtopic again, I just installed GPS+roadmap and am anxious to go try it out. I'll let everyone know how it goes.

Thanks a lot to Yang for directing me to the european-maps-thread, I didn't find it myself. So it might be possible that nobody needs these db-entries für cities if there are real maps. But elsewhere, I keep them :-).

Matthew, I don't want to go completely OT, so just some words to this: I tested many adapters and some bluetooth access-points for writing my (german) book about this. I figured out that especially the access-points (aps) are completely different from each other. Some you can ask via snmp, others won't be interested in such packets. I don't care if I can read the existence of my mobile from the ap via http or snmp or whatever might exist but most of the aps are only for connection your bluetooth-notebook or pda to the local net. As you can see on my site I tested the connection via the serial port with a serial-bluetooth-adaptor, too. This worked fine and maybe there's a way to integrate such a thing into the empeg in the future without losing my serial which I need for GPSapp (to get the turn back to GPSapp :-) ). For further exchanges about bluetooth we might open a new thread or post into my forum (which shall not be a competition to this great forum, but to keep it simple to find a closed section for connecting empeg wirelessly).
