Is this the correct Cambridge CarAudio as recommended by the empeg team?

I've had to suffer with just 6 CD's worth of music since March.

Make sure they do a good job , they did mine which was ok but broke the surround for the stereo and i had to wait a few weeks for another one from japan and for them to re do it.

They also squashed my sled out of shape and only put 2 screws in to hold the stereo cage in to the dash which caused loads of rattles.

The reason i went with them was i could not get the empeg to work in my car ,they found the problem (bad earth on the loom).

But i wont be going with them again , and when i fit my tuner i am going to buy another std factory carrier as mine is well bent now.

make sure that they don't cut the power cable to the tuner module, they did this on mine which really p****d me off when I went to install the tuner, only to find that the cable was cut and had been run somewhere else, I wouldn't have minded so much if they'd then reconnected it back.... I didn't find out until I installed the tuner and found there to be a complete lack of power....delayed my tuner working by a day until I could get the crimps to make a small patch cable...

..other than that (which i'd never have noticed if I hadn't installed a tuner) they did a decent job....

Hmm, I thought they were the experts. I'm driving up from London especially to use them, but now I'm not so sure it's a good idea.

...don't get me wrong, they did a good job, the install is very nice, nothins visible, it's all well mounted..... I can't actually fault the install..... The guy said, "ahh an empeg, haven't seen one of those in a while..." so they definately know what they're doing....

What exactly are you getting done? I've just bought a new car and wondered how much it would cost to get the empeg installed. I installed it in my last car but that was a banger, I wonder wether it might be a good idea to let the professionals take a look at it.

I'm getting it installed in place of the original headunit, which is a 2-din CD and tape unit. You can see it in the bottom left of this picture



I have a dash kit to convert it to 1-din plus a pocket, and I have a wiring harness that (should) connect the empeg to the existing amp, allowing me to keep the standard amp and speakers. Hopefully.

Cambridge Car Audio have quoted me £35 and said it should take about an hour.

Ah right, i think it'll be an amp in the boot job with me.... I've opted for the flensburg crap-o-tron single disc unit. I have a feeling I may be attempting this myself.

I got a bloke to fit mine, add an amp under the seat and fit new fuses/wiring etc - cost £70 and took him about 2 hours. Apparently the amp took the most time - seats out and bolts fitted etc.

Well, the guys at Cambridge Car Audio are nice guys, but were sadly unable to fit my empeg. They are going to find out if a wiring harness is in development for my car and call me back later today.

Any nerd can fit a car stereo/amp - it's a chance to:

a) Get new tools which are "essential" for the job
b) Spend hours under the dash/seats/carpet of your car
c) Snap irreplaceable plastic clips and shout "bugger!"
d) Find you haven't got some specific part when you are 99% done

I can understand people with nice/new cars not wanting to do this, and having a car of which there are only 100 in the country does cause it's own problems! (parts are easy though - thank god for limos!)

Not every nerd can connect an empeg to the existing amp in a Lexus though. In fact it seems that no number of nerds is sufficient.

Still, it adds amunition to the "must get an MX5" war that i am fighting with SWMBO

Any nerd can fit a car stereo/amp - it's a chance to:

a) Get new tools which are "essential" for the job
b) Spend hours under the dash/seats/carpet of your car
c) Snap irreplaceable plastic clips and shout "bugger!"
d) Find you haven't got some specific part when you are 99% done

e) Play with various epoxy-/cyrano-/solvent- based glues to try and fix the clips broken in (c).
