I have owned my Empeg for well over 18 months now, I have always had one little problem or another with it, but this weekend all that changed !!!

After Rob S fixed the Hard Drive Pin Header problem (and a new HD cable, cheers Rob ) at the european meet it was 100% better, no lockups and boots EVERY time.

But, I was never happy with my DIY install. At high volumes the Empeg would cut out, I just turned the volume down a bit and all was OK. This weekend I took the whole install apart and ran a 12v feed direct from the battery and an earth back too.

Not only have I solved the cut outs, but the slight ground loop I had has also gone So I'm very happy with myself. Just need to tidy up a bit and it will be perfect. If I am up to it I may make up the harness, and put in my Black Sled.

Yours (Very Chuffed with ones self)

Cris.

Congratulations and well done. "Isn't it nice when things just work?"

I was thinking that perhaps you could just use the harness from your original sled instead of having to make up a new one right away. Or is Rob's sled somehow different?

The advantage of making my own harness will be that I only need to put on what I need. It is very tight behind my dash.

I'm kind of hoping that if I remove unwanted wiring it will improve air flow behind the dash and help cool the Empeg down. At the moment it lasts about 2 hours before HiJack jumps in and I have to let it cool down. I'm even toying with the idea of a small fan, a bit like in Mark Lords docks.

Cheers

I found it pretty easy to remove the unused connections from my standard sled - stick a paper clip into the right bit of the connector and the pin slides out. I removed the serial, mic & aux-in lines from mine like this.

The fan thing I did. No amount of minimzing wiring in my dash was going to help keep the empeg cool in the winter (doesn't sound right, does it?). Through discussion on this forum, a 40x40x6 mm fan made by ADDA was suggested. I bought it, installed it, and I'm happy with it.

I no longer get warnings when I have to turn on the heat to keep myself alive.

I was thinking of mounting the fan behind the Empeg in the Dash atached to the 12v switch, rather than inside the case.

My headunit is above the Empeg, so there is almost no airspace at the top of the unit. I can't put it on top of the headunit because the front panel couldn't flip down.

I'm going to have to think about this one.

Cheers

I think that pretty much *any* airflow improvement oughta make a big difference!

My docks have the fancy duct from the top vents, but only because I want the fan to just barely idle when spinning. In an automobile, it can spin much faster and still be inaudible.

Cheers

Do you have a US source for that part? The FAQ lists Farnell part numbers only.

I have no trouble finding 40x40x10 fans (they're in every computer store), it's the 40x40x6 fans that I can't locate easily.

I can't remember who suggested them, but they did name Mouser Electronics as a place to buy them. That's where I ordered the two I bought. They still carry an ADDA 12V 40x40x6 DC fan, although I'm not sure if it's the same model as the one I purchased.

Looks right to me. Added to the FAQ entry, thanks!
