Technicially empeg (the company) never went under. They got bought by Rio, at a time when they wern't having any problems selling the units for $1000 and up. Rio began to sell them via Car Toys even, but then pulled out. The general impression I got was that Rio had no interest in competiting with the likes of Sony, Pioneer, and others in the car market. They however did, and still do have an interest in marketing to OEMs, to have this type of device sold as the main car stereo.
Sales wise, probably a good half were sold before the firesale. Estimates put the total units worldwide at about 4,500, with about 400 being Mark 1, 1000 being Mark 2, and the rest being Mark 2a.
