Has anyone tried to recompile the empeg kernel using redhat 7.0 and the cross-compiler ? I keep getting an error telling me to update my Binutils to version 2.9.5 and Redhat 7.0 installs with 2.10.0.18.

The version of binutils that Redhat comes with doesn't matter - it isn't set up for cross-compilation, so you need a special one anyway. Grab a source tarball of binutils 2.9.5.0.22 (for example from the source rpm in Redhat 6.2) and compile it for an ARM target. I don't have the exact instructions for doing that but I remember it being fairly painless.

Good luck getting anything to compile with the version of GCC redhat 7 shipped with (2.96). My laptop with RedHat 7 on it (just switched to FreeBSD actually) wouldn't even compile the kernel sources shipped with RH 7 with the default GCC.

They ship egcs-1.1.2 (as kgcc) for exactly that purpose.

If you are using the cross-compiler from the developer site it has an old version of binutils that doesn't compile new kernels. I have a new package on my web page that I have used under Mandrake 7.0 and Debian Potato, it should run under Redhat 7.0. You can get it on my programing page.

Brian,

Any particular reason you don't want non-us people to download the toolchains?

I do want to, but If there is a legal implication, I'll hold off.

Cheers,

Paul.

OK, I'll read the webpage more carefully next time.

However, I thought that 'crypt' and other 128 bit encryption software was now okay to download, as long as you don't export to a US embargoed country - no?

Cheers,

Paul.

I'm not certain on that. I just put it there because I know the Howto says something about exporting the source. I'm not watching my logs and I don't think anything would happen to me, I just put that up for a safety measure. Thats all I'm going to say now.
