So I just built a new machine using this motherboard and WinXP Pro SP2. For some reason I can't get the USB 2.0 ports to work in high speed.

Any thoughts would be welcome, thanks!

You know, I was having that problem on my motherboard as well. I had a new external disk drive and the USB only worked at standard speed. I gave up and switched it to firewire.

Funny thing is, I remember USB 2.0 working when I plugged in the Karma during the beta testing phase. So I dunno what changed. Or perhaps nothing changed, and it was the device itself that was giving me grief.

Check your BIOS settings, mine had settings related to that. And the funny thing is, the names of the settings were counter-intuitive, so you weren't sure which was the fastest setting until after you looked at the help text.

Edit: I was also using an Asus motherboard, a P4C800 Deluxe. Wonder if that's a factor?

cool, i'll take a look at the BIOS stuff. For now I just pulled the 2.0 card out of my old machine and put it in the new one to use my 250Gb external on, and all works fine. Which leads me to believe that it must be the bios settings.

I had this problem on my buddy's XP machine. We just went into "Device Manager" and clicked "Update Driver" on the USB controllers. It worked right away and he was able to see his new printer.

Are there any unrecognised devices in device manager? You might not have a compatible driver installed for the USB 2.0 portion of the USB chipset.

Yeah, I tried updating the drivers and all that. There are no urecognized drivers either. I havent tried the BIOS setttings yet, but I will later today.

My new Shuttle had a similar problem. There was a BIOS setting under integrated peripherals. You could set USB1.1 only, USB 1.1 + 2.0 or 2.0 only. I had mistakenly left it at 1.1 only, once I changed it and restarted the box Linux suddenly discovered some ehci devices that weren't enabled before. So I'd certainly look in the BIOS

well, I switched up the setttings in the BIOS and still nothing.

seems a bit fishy to me and I don't really know where to go from there.

Stick a KNOPPIX cd into the drive and reboot. Specify "knoppix26" at the boot prompt. See if things work at high-speed once it's up and running.

Have you installed the latest...

- BIOS Flash from Asus?

- Drivers for the USB controller from Asus?

And do you have more than one device which uses USB 2.0, so that you can be sure it's not just the fault of the device?
