Longhorn is being officially called Windows Vista

Why did they use a funny name? Apparently, "the new name was aimed at "communicating the idea of clarity."" So, three years from now, we'll be asking, "Wait, which is the latest version? Windows Vista, or Windows Viewpoint, or Windows Overlook, or Windows Farsight...." Perpetuating the ME/2k/XP problem.

Sheesh, it's Windows 6.0.

I still think they were just mad at CNN for the vaporware jokes, like "Foghorn Longhorn". Note the date stamp on the top of the article: July 21, 2005: 2:20 PM EDT... Coincidence?

Now with squishy screen shots.

Looks too much like XP to be "the next big thing." Maybe XP SP2 really was "the next Windows 95", ie: the big technological advancement which many future versions are built on. I still think 2k is the Win95 of the 21st century.

Wow, those must be very popular right now. The site is very slow, and none of the actual pictures are showing up.

Beta 1 lacks the Avalon graphics engine that is supposed to be the big change in Longhorn. This is actually very typical, as Beta 1 products of Windows releases rarley look anything like shipping products. I have a Beta 1 CD of Windows ME around here somewhere, and it was drasticially different then the Windows 98 Service Pack it really turned out to be.

OS X was also similar in earlier betas. None of the really advanced graphics stuff was in, so for the most part it had an odd OS 9 look to it, as they wern't sure what was going to be done yet, and just threw in the interface from the early OS X Server versions.
