Is it possible to set up a mail client on both my work and home PCs that could access the same POP3 account and both stay in synch?

I'm getting ADSL at home so thought I should set up mail too, just don't want another separate mail account.

I used to access my pop account from several places, with home being the end-all 'warehouse'. Only there did I allow Eudora to remove the mail from the server.
No sync, though.

It depends what you mean by "in sync". You could leave every message on the POP server and have both clients download everything. But your POP server provider might not like that. That's the only way to be sure that both clients will have the same messages, though. There's no way to set up your POP server to check to see if all of the clients have downloaded the message and then delete it from the server. (I mean, it's technically feasible, but no one's done it.)

A better solution might be to have GMail (or some other mail service) download that POP mail for you.

Personally, I'd set up or find an IMAP server somewhere that could download the mail via POP and re-present it to your two clients.

It's not the solution you want, but my solution to this was to set up an IMAP server at home on my Linux box and use fetchmail to check all of my POP3 accounts and deliver the mail to my IMAP server. Then I just check my IMAP server, and since everthing is stored on the server, it's all synchronized for any client I use to check my mail (including my own Webmail setup.) This does mean that you'll want to make sure your home connection is always-on and requires a decent amount of setup on your server at home, but once it's done, I think it's the optimal solution.

Well, the first question is what operating system you're running. My IMAP setup is on Linux (specifically Fedora.) I have no experience with IMAP servers on Windows, and wouldn't trust a Windows PC as my one and only email repository.

Well, IMAP is an alternative solution to mail delivery. It's sort of a cousin to POP. The big difference in this case is that it keeps all of the mail on the server and your client manipulates the data on the server rather than downloading the messages and manipulating it there. That means that all clients see the exact same set of messages.

The problem with this is that you need an IMAP server that you can connect to, if not all of the time, then a decent amount of the time. So your first question is, is there a computer I have control of on the Internet that I can run a server on?

Well, if you were running Unix, I'd know exactly what to do, but on Windows I'm not so sure. I'm sure you can make it happen, but, basically, you want to get an IMAP server up and running and then find (or write) a program that will download your POP mail periodically and insert it into your IMAP server. Neither one should be terribly difficult, but I don't really know where to start on Windows.

I may well go the Linux route, like I say I may end up running slim server on a linux machine

I've done a lot of research into this, and these folks seem to have the best imap server for winders:

However, I've decided that setting up a linux machine and running the imap server on that's a better plan.

Also, I found it sad that the former president of the Unix User's Association of Southern California runs unix on his car stereo only.
