Brilliant idea for the writer-less TV execs

If the TV execs weren't so consistently behind the times, they'd simply ignore the Writers Guild of America and open the script writing task up to the wilds of the Internet. Seriously, how many fanboys, bloggers, continuity nerds, wanna-be comedians, English majors, and overseas spam mafia would KILL to collaboratively write scripts for their favorite shows? The tidal wave of interest this would generate would actually restore television as a viable medium in the age of New Media.
Come on, execs, with so many potential strike breaking contributors, the union goons can't possibly break ALL of their the legs. Who's with me?

open source tv??? So we could expect a show to be well written until the writers have a falling out and decide to break away causing irreconcilable forking of the story line.

All I can say is that if I was teaching a creative writing class, this would be my assignment for the students. Write a scene from your favorite TV show as if it were written by an arbitrarily large Internet fanboy community. Hilarity ensues.

No offense, but I think I would really dislike those shows. Many of these professional writers are actually good writers, and can do it a thousand times better than an online community of "fanboys." I said "many," though. Some shows might benefit from this approach (Heroes comes to mind).
But I don't think you could replace the writing that has gone into programming like the first season of Lost, or the entirety of Avatar (which has taken it's spot as my favorite TV program on the air right now).

Nothing kills a show more consistently than when the writers start writing what the fans claim they want to see.

Hm, but isn't is simple statistics that with the amount of potential contributing online fans, they'd create SOMETHING good? There's one person out of ~50 I know well who'd be a great script writing contributor. That's a decent percentage of people.

Honestly, I did not know this opinion (since I don't watch TV), but I have a hunch it's unfortunately true. Fans would probably waste no time tying up all the loose ends and answering all the questions. But the fact that episodic TV (that I've seen) intentionally beats around the bush and rarely comes to conclusion is exactly why I don't watch it. Since I prefer a story with conclusion, I watch movies.

Dell 2707WFP 27" widescreen, sitting in its box on my floor, waiting to be my Christmas present. Maybe fans could write non-episodic shows like sitcoms and comedies such as The Office. I had a flash of an idea for that show. Wish I could contribute it. I should post this idea to the blogosphere...
