My head unit has two sets of RCA pre-outs (and so does the empeg, right?), but each only has one set of aux-ins. What do you do here? Fading isn't that important, should I just use the two front chanels? Is there advantage to combining front and rear? Does that mess up the audio in any way? (Like 8v preouts on 1v in instead of 4v on 1v :) ?)

This doesn't answer your question, but I would get rid of the headunit and just use the empeg. The tuner will be available soon.

I would want the 2nd head unit even with the empeg tuner so I could have a cd player too

There is no advantage to combining front and rear. The front outputs and the rear outputs are the same on car stereos. For whichever unit you're feeding into the other unit, set the fader in the middle and use one pair of outputs to feed the other unit. Then the second unit does all the fading.

The only time this would get confusing is if the fronts and rears had some sort of different equalization and/or crossover associated with them. For instance, if your stereo had a "Front Image Enhancer". In that case, just make sure you turn off that feature.

The fader is not a factor in deciding which of the two units "comes first" in the audio daisy-chain. There are other factors, covered in this FAQ entry.

You know, honestly, I said the same thing when I got my empeg. I even went sofar as to buy a Tuffy stereo center console so that I could mount my CD player in my Jeep along with my empeg so I could still play CDs.

Want to know how much I used my CD player after I got my empeg? nil. It was a waste of money buying that console. I ended up taking the CD player out. (Still have the console but only because its a tuffy and lets me put my empeg in it to lock it up when I leave my Jeep... pryproof and pickproof security).

Anyway, I can't tell you what your preferences are, but I have a *LOT* of CDs and after I got my empeg and ripped them and put them on it, I never, EVER went back to CDs again.

Would that be soon in geological terms?

Sue. (who is wondering if radio will be obsolete before tuner is shipped)

ROFL! You would have to ask Toby about that, he's the geologist. (Some of the visuals he coded for the Empeg have geological names.)

Sue.

Is that your name, or what you intend to do if you don't get the tuner module soon?

We don't get many ladies on this BBS (assuming that's your name and it's the traditional nickname for Susan). Let's see, there's Crewe and Laura, and I think that's about it so far...

I get used to being in a fairly small minority being a woman and a gadget geek :-)

I've actually been lurking here pretty much since the beginning, but I'm hardly a prolific poster. This takes my grand total to 3!

Sue.

For the most part, that is a good generalization. I can only think of two reasons to have the second head unit.

1) If you compete in IASCA stereo competitions, IASCA will not allow you to use the MP3 player as your source -- you MUST use the judge's copy of the Official IASCA CD. (Can't even use your own copy of the CD any more!)

2) If you have made the commitment to being able to play the IASCA CD, then you might as well use the tuner in the second head unit, instead of spending the $100 or so for the empeg tuner and ripping your dash all apart (again) to install it.

But unless you are competing, CJ is right -- you will never miss having a CD player in your car.

What i do is i have the empeg on its own and in the glovebox the serial cable is pulled through into the glovebox as is the aux cable this means that i can run whatever i like through the empeg eg a cd walkman or my laptop. What i also have is a usb cable run through the dash to behind the empeg cage which can be pulled through and then the empeg unit put into the docking cage and i can use the laptop and usb connection. If i don't want to use it the cable is normally just left behind the cage and can be reached through the small hole in the back.

I really don't miss my cd player but i do miss the radio but it is coming isn't it folks
