That night, the water main above our room broke (second time in two years) and flooded the room with an estimated 20,000 gallons of water.

I my mother's case the glass is half-empty, it has dropped to the floor and smashed, it was someone else's glass that she had borrowed, someone else's child has trodden in the broken glass and is now bleeding over the white carpet, the carpet is some else's and she will feel compelled to insist on paying to replace the ruined glass and carpet...
