I assume that the market has dropped very, very low indeed. frown
Just paid 19,50$ on eGay for a NIB MK2a with 60GB. Klick here.
This is my fourth unit now. grin

Even if it doesn't work it is a bargain - 2 years ago i paid Noritake nearly 100$ only for a new VFD display for my first "original" empeg. shocked
And i took two of them to be ready for further incidents. crazy
Btw: I'm still using my first empeg connected via a RCA-to-AI-Net-adapter to an Alpine IVA-D105R - in former times to a TDA-7638R.

Anyway - what could we expect?
It's very old technique from ten years ago - even if it was very genious for its time and brought us this very nice community and a lot of fun tweaking it.
But every crappy and cheap car stereo from Taiwan can do more e.g. playing DVDs
and showing them on the built-in widescreen TFT and so forth - well, not so charming though. wink

In the end i would avoid offering them on eGay.
But if i see some guys from the BBS calling prices of more than 200$ then i think this is overdone.

How are your estimations ?
But please be gentle and don't hit me too hard. wink

That's a very keen price, and I'm certainly glad it ended up with someone who knows what it is, rather than someone who believed the seller's "It plugs into a standard car-radio port" eek

Sad, but perfectly believable. These days, how many new cars still make it possible to install your own DIN-chassis stereo?

Almost all of them if you're willing to make, or have made, custom fascias, consoles, and potentially wiring. wink Every rental car I've been in this past year seems like it would have been somewhat straight-forward to do if there's a trim kit available. Two Pontiac and two Toyota models since April.

Car audio has always been super-niche, but I don't know how much the name brands have been suffering year of year because of changes to console layout and integration. You can still see a lot of product for sale from the usual suspects.

I'll be keeping my eye out for any more $20 empegs that's for sure. I wasn't able to find jack on eBay after reading this post earlier today.

Consider our Audi A3. I suppose you could shoehorn an empeg into it, but you'd lose the integration of the stereo and everything else (Bluetooth, synchronized time, display between the tach and spedometer, etc.). With our Acura TL, you have all kinds of integration between the stereo and the nav system.

At least the Acura came with a system that sounds pretty damn good, for a factory stereo system. The Audi is pretty poor. And don't get me started on its "six CD changer" iPod interface.

I currently have a company car so I can't do anything to it. I was thinking about hacking the empeg into a different enclosure that would be more friendly to just sitting someplace in the car connected to a line in.

I know I could do it with no modification but a different shape case would be better.

I am seriously considering to go back to the Empeg after one yer with Alpine. I miss it terribly. Since my two empegs both have (minor) issue, I would definitely buy a NIB Empeg at that price!

Yup, both my empegs have issues (sadly I think my main unit is terminal) so I've been using a Sony Bluetooth headunit for a year now. Having handsfree that 'just works' is great and now the iPod touch does A2DP it makes listening to stuff off it so much easier. I would love to have the empeg back where it belongs, but since every new car I've been looking at has some sort of spiffy TFT touchscreen on the dash, I think it's unlikely.

I've recently moved to Singapore and it seems most cars here have aftermarket stereos. I'm quite surprised by that.

Of course, I can't find a double din adapter for my Volvo xc90...

Larry, don't get an adapter, just use two radios!

I'd pay for a NIB empeg, since mine is showing signs of wear. Just minor signs. Hang in there, empeg, you've got to last many more years.
