I am having a problem getting a new 48gig hard disk to install. The old 10gig still works fine in this Rio v2a, and I just upgraded it to 2.00b3 without a problem. With (only) the new disk installed, I ran the new builder program ( 20011022 ) and that appeared to run ok ( left it testing disk for >1 hour ). But now when I try and install either consumer or developer images, it runs for a while, but during one of the final reboots I get :

Error "Bad pump response to device select" occurred during stage 0x20

On the Rio display ( after the above error ) the player finishes rebooting and says

Builder Image
Drive(s) appear to be already built.

Below is a log from a boot of the drive now :

Greetings!

Are you running a 10GB in combination with a 48GB? I know that archeon has a similar configuration and was running into all sorts of interesting problems with it...

I remember seeing a similar error one time with the old builder on the 48GB drive I am using as the slave drive. I just continued normally, and it seemed to work fine.

You might want to try a rebuild on that drive. Also, the new builder is beta. I used the old version of the builder on mine. You might want to try to fall back to that builder version and see it that helps also.

Ahh, there you are , I couldn't remember who had already done it.

I have removed the 10gig and am trying to install TWO new 48gig drives. The old builder program does not work on the new drives. The new builder program does complete its task.

Its when I try and get an image ( have tried dev and consumer images going back all the way to v1).

It appears like the problem with v2 beta over serial/USB, where its a timing issue in that the empeg does not reboot quick enough at one point.

Managed to install v200b3 on one disk, and looks like its installing just fine on the second disk now.

Maybe it is due to the fact I dug out an old ( slow ) laptop with Win98 and ran the Player Upgrade from that ( rather than fast Win2k laptop ).

Maybe its just luck ( although I must have tried the install near 50 times without any joy )

Maybe its because I just screwed the HD's into the cradle ( although they were resting insulated from the Empeg chasis before this ).

Greetings!

I know the 48GB drives seem a lot more tempermental. I personally had success with the old version of the builder, but I was using a Mark2, not the 2a. That error had come up on the second drive, but I was able to go ahead with the build, and (after loading the developer kernel and looking around) loaded everything up.

The bug with sync under 2.0b3 is with a lot of large drives, more likely to happen with USB. I think there might be timing issues with the larger drives, expecting the player to respond more quickly and having it time out while the drive is still doing its thing. I know that the sync bug is a known bug, FITNR. I personally would like to see some of the timeouts increased, especially where reboots are needed. When you have a lot more drive space to work with, you need the time to finish your housekeeping.

I find the player takes a bit more time to boot / rebuild databases, but I have not had any operational problems with the combination.

You will find the extra space very nice indeed!!!

If you run into problems, send me email. It has been a while, but I might be able to help.

A while? Only a couple of days I thought Paul!

Mardibloke :
I too had a lot of troubles combining a 10 gig with a 48gig, and I finally gave in : I'm only using the 48gig now, because those two seemed like an impossible combination.
I will buy a second 48gig in due time, and see what that gives...

I too had the same error you had, but I encoutered it because I used the 'old' car2.builder.image, which wasn't suited for the Mk2a's, only mk2's. The new builder (update two weeks ago) should have solved all those problems.
As many problems as I already had with my Mk2a, I never had any problems installing a consumer or developer build though.

Actually, just having flashbacks to my own install. Doing both drives, impatiently waiting for the software load to complete, so I could test it with emplode...

Just to chime in, I recently added a 48 to my "10 Gig" Mk.2a. The actual drive as shipped from Empeg was a 12.0GB Travelstar, and I added the 48GB Travelstar with no trouble. The hardest part of the install was finding a 2mm jumper. I disconnected the 12GB, connected the 48GB, ran the new builder, followed by the current beta developer build, and then added the slave jumper and reinstalled the 12GB. No problems reported; all appears well, it seems to be booting from the 12GB, and as of now there's about 6GB of music on the second drive. (Though, the drive= advanced search doesn't seem to work in emplode...)

Well, good dor you! I'm glad somebody's having good luck installing these drives

Though there's somebody else on this board who had also had good luck combining a 12gig with the 48gig. I have a 10gig. So far I've read of nobody other than myself who had tried this combination. I'm still sticking to my first thought : those two drives don't mix...
