Has anyone done an install in a Silverado pickup?
Ideally I would like to replace the remote cassette player which is separate from the cd/receiver unit and hang on to the cd/receiver cos it has that neat speed regulated volume and a not bad receiver.
Also it means leaving major parts of the dash alone.

Any bright ideas????

Mike

Your correct. A GM headunit won't recognize an auxiallary RCA signal (such as an empeg). The aux. euip. usually a cd-changer has to be able to communicate with the headunit to tell it to allow aux. play. There are aftermarket adaptors sold that will do this. They are described in the FAQs, but they will only work if you ALSO add a cd-changer. With help from people on this board I've been trying to figure out how the headunit talks to other components of the car but as far as your needs ....don't hold your breath, I'm finding out it's not trivial.

This may very well be a dumb statement, but.......
The thing I don't get is that there is already some Aux equipment fitted (the remote cassette player). Can't I just replace it with the Rio??
My problem with replacing the OE head unit is that it also has Onstar which I undeerstand causes allsorts of other headaches.

about the onstar i also have it on my truck,I think you can hook onstar up to a seperate speaker with its own amp.especially if you plan on hooking up amps to your head unit. Can any buddy verify this.Thank you

back again, after more research...
it looks like it depends on the GM head unit you have as standard.
The cassette head unit has no Aux.
The CD head unit does have an Aux input which is usually connected to the optional remote cassette player.

I'm pretty sure if your stock radio has a "tape" or "aux" button it has aux inputs. If it has a "source" button then it does not.

One trick that may work (in theory) if you leave the tape deck but connect the riocar rca cables thru a converter (for bose stereos) to the speaker wires running from the tape deck to the headunit. This may not work if a tape needs to be in the player for the headunit to switch into aux. mode. I don't know if this will work and before you try anything like that I would make sure you know what your'e doing and BE SURE you know what wires are what.
