What about putting some cool logos here?
So, let's begin with this pretty one:

NB: maybe a section on riocar.org?

Images like that is probably exactly WHY there may not be a section at RioCar.org, not only is it someelses photograph, but people like me could get fired for opening a file like that at work. Working within a big organization like I do, there are two people who's full time job is looking for workers viewing offensive material. I've met him and he's a nice guy (in case he's reading this! j/k)

But honestly, you might want to edit your post to remove at least the gif.

I expect the same guy is responsible for searching employees for tabloid newspapers each morning.

We don't have "page 3 girls" in the US if that is what you are refering to.

But he has told me about some weird stuff... I'll leave it to your imagination, but you'd be surprised what some people will enter into a search engine while at work....

i don't think full censorship is needed, maybe jsut for people to post a warning if you are at work line in there.

Sorry, I didn't think about that.
Here at my work, the policy is less rude than yours I think.
The pic was more pretty than 'offensive' I thought. And those 'big brothers' ;-) people are not really annoyed by seeing this kind of material...
But the warning solution is good I think.
So, no more logos?

Dispite the 'scandalous' material posted by our friend, should there be a images part to the riocar.org site, of which boot logos is one?
We have image pan maps, boot logos, vu meters and others.

ideas?

Ugh... I'm one of the Network Nazi's at my work. Lemme tell you. I HATE that part of the job. I have more of an issue with users gaming than with porn though. And gaming DOES bug me.

Yes, there should be a section on the site for the images. I suck at graphics and am looking foward to "borrowing" some from the site.

Technically the code already exists for the most part. All I need to do is tweak the boot logo code.

But I am a bit afraid of the freedoms in the Image Pan format. If it is hosted on riocar.org, an adult image section shouldn't be too much problem, since all owners of an empeg are most likely old enough. I just don't want to deal with having to implement an easily bypass able age check system.

I'll poke around at the image pan stuff out there (I haven't even tried it yet) and try to make up my mind. The other 2 should be easy, since those are 128x32 anyhow.

And since I haven't payed much attention to it, I need this question answered. Is there a Linux converter for an image to the format the visuals use? If I do go ahead with this, I'd like to offer a direct file download. And I'll probably try to get a logo file creator started, to make it easier once the ability to change logos on the fly from the empeg develops.

I dunno. We were just discussing, over on the Reviews forum, when Yz33d would be getting his driver's license.

I *do* understand (to a certain extent) companies not being happy about employees using bandwith (and their time) for non-job-related activity. I *don't* understand singling out 'offensive' material. (Offensive to whom? I, for example, find material on some 'religious' sites offensive. So what?)

Then again, I think that worker productivity has to be the only measure. If my programmers churn out good code fast enough, I don't care whether they find it necessary to occasionally play games, discuss soccer, participate on this or other BBS or NG, or admire Jenffer Lopez' tits (or Long Dong Silver's, er, long dong). I don't like them download movies or music, but that's because of laughable bandwith we have.

I *don't* understand singling out 'offensive' material.

Because, in a corporate situation, the difference between "non-work-related" and "offensive" is the difference between a nuisance productivity loss and a major lawsuit.

If an employee is reading online Dilbert cartoons on company time, and a co-worker walks by, it's not a big deal. But if an employee is viewing pornography and the same co-worker walks by, the company can be sued for sexual harassment.

It's a similar situation with e-mails. If you use the company e-mail system to send jokes to your co-workers, and a sexually explicit joke gets forwarded to the wrong person, Game Over. There are actual legal precedents in this area.

The other thing to keep in mind is that when you pay for the bandwidth, you are granted the right to impose whatever moral restrictions you wish to on how that bandwidth gets used. If someone doesn't like it, they are more than welcome to do their surfing on their own time.

Companies do indeed realize that not all of the internet use at work is for strictly job-related purposes, and that it's a bit of a "convenience" that is akin to providing magazines in the break room. But with that, there are going to be cases where a good employee gets fired for sending one dirty email or browsing one dirty website, while another slack-jawed stiff employee surfs the net 24/7 and keeps their job.

Yeah, I know about those legal precedents about 'sexual harassment'. It seems that a guy who sends one 'wrong' joke gets fired, and boss who fires 'uncooperative' subordinate usually gets away with it (remember Larry Ellison case?). What I don't understand is the legal climate, not company policies (which have to adapt to that climate). What happened to American individualism? Do working women really need lawyers to protect them from the guy complimenting the new dress (BTW, in many places, France for example, the guy would be considred rude *not* complimenting the new dress).

Which reminds me of a case when a woman brought up sexual harassment charges against a guy who belched, farted and scratched his crotch when she was around (he also stank). It turned out the guy did that in male company, too, so he was an 'equal opportunity harasser' - the charges did not stand.

I didn't mean to bring up a whole sexual harrassment debate. Sorry. And I wasn't offended. But I DO worry about offending others. Not only co-workers, but if a client is getting a tour of our facilities and passes by my computer to see soft-porn or whatever - it just makes the company look bad. American individualism (which refers more to independance than free speach) is alive and well. My company owns the bandwidth, needs it for very important work (if we lose network connectivity, we can get fined big $$ for not supplying our promised service) so they can say what can and can't be done with it. They own the computers too. So, I in fact think they are being very generous knowingly letting me surf the web when it doesn't effect my job.

I was exagerating a bit about the network nazi's too. They very rarely do random searches (although it is being discussed having an automated version of it). Their full time is spent investigating complaints. So if someone is suspected of or known to being doing something, they collect all the evidence and present it to the proper supervisors, etc. I've been told it is an akward moment giving a 30-page report full of printed jpg's or whatever to someone in a business setting. "Yes mame, that was 15 minutes at www(dot)surf4picsofyoungboyswhileatwork(dot)com."

I think a simple warning would sufice. And thanks for being the first person to actually attach a gif so I can for once SEE the image pans people have been working on. (Don't have a RAW viewer handy).

I wasn't the guy who posted the pic in the first place. I am just an European loudmouth who gets dragged into all kinds of vaguelly political debate at the drop of the hat .

I understand and agree (mostly ) with your arguments, of course.

I would promise to stay on-topic in future, but I could as well promise to lose 50lb in the next two months

Cheers!

Please, just make sure someone mentions "ATI" and graphics cards every now and then in the OffTopic forum. I want to make sure I have a reason to pop in here from work every now and then.

Net-access is available to all our employees. But there is plenty of monitoring software enabled (time loggers, profilers and domain/IP blocks) on some of our servers. This came up because of leaked information last year which was unfortunate. Some jack-ass posted details of one of our all-hands meetings, including roadmap onto Yahoo forums the very same afternoon. Even after having had pointed out that everything was confidential. Access/information can be blocked/logged on a per-port basis. That means anyone's desk workstation can be pinpointed. I've had to have a lot of material unblocked because it fits in with my work-related surfing (testing video streaming and acceleration, etc.) I remember when this all started being implemented. www.partsexpress.com was partially blocked (look in the middle of the domain name... )

I suggested that the image archive be a part of the riocar.org site in the original emRAWerter thread, I don't see how it would be a problem, you simply submit your .gif's or whatever that you've reduced down to the colors all ready to be copied into emRAWerter, and then submit them.

the same way we do it with the boot logo's, all the boot logo's are checked to make sure they are not offensive, couldn't we do the same thing with the image pan/other logos?

I have a few logo's of my own, some borderline offensive for the workplace so I wouldn't put those up, but I have others as well, and I'd like to get some that other people have made.

Ends up that a few people WEREn't reducing colors to the proper color scale.... so some of the logos on the logo site don't work too well. And since the ImagePan images have fewer requirements (at least as far as size goes) there was some worry that people might just be uploading images they find all over the internet...

But it looks like Drakino may have warmed up to the idea.
