at work i have a windows 2000 machine. anytime i try and put an audio cd in the tray to listen to it my system hangs. it hangs to the point that even the three finger salut will not work. after about 2 minutes pass i will be able to work again on my computer but the cd will not play. i have windows 98 at home and have never encountered a problem like this before. what do i need to do to be able to listen to music at work?

thanks in advance

what program? What type of drive? Win2K has ASPI issues, but that usually pops up only when you try to rip. I would make sure you have the latest drivers (win2k) for your cd-rom drive.

it doesn't matter which program i run. ive tried to use the cd player program that comes standard, i've tried using winamp, ive tried using mediaplayer. as soon as the cd-rom drive closes the disk spins and the system locks up. everyonce in awhile if i hit the eject button on the cd-rom door the disk will start playing but usually will stop after a few seconds. if i hit the eject button again it will start playing again but still only for a few seconds. eventually i will hit the eject button and my disk will eject. i updated my drivers and that still didn't fix the problem.

I hate to ask this... but maybe the lens is dirty? Adaptec also released an ASPI driver for Win2K that I have installed and it resolved my ripping issues.... You may want to search their site.

I'm pretty sure Windows2000 uses DAE (Digital Audio Extraction) by default to play audio CDs. The drive you are using my be incompatible with DAE or can't keep up.

Go into the properties for your CD-ROM drive in the device manager and uncheck the box illustrated below:

Also try disabling the auto-play-CDs feature. That could be what's killing it. I forget where the option is in the system.

If it happened to ALL of you CD's then the lens (not disk) would be a possibility but I think that Rob's suggestion is more likely.

i disabled the autoplay and the system is only a month old so i doubt it is the lens. windows has been pushing my buttons the past few months. i took a unix course maybe i should start running that! on another note, the united states problems could be easily fixed if the world ran on unix

rm -r /bin/laden

If this is a work machine, is it on a network? If so is there a way that a sysm admin could have the cd drive disabled? Most work places don't want users being able to use the cd-rom or floppy drive for reasons. Just a shot in the dark.

Are you able to run a data cd in it?

Other things to check:

- Make sure you have the latest drivers for the CD-ROM for that operating system.

- Make sure you are not infected with a virus.

- Remove all adware/spyware from your system with Lavasoft's Ad-Aware.

Another thing to check. Did you recently install any CD burning software such as Nero or EZ CD Creator? I seem to recall that I had trouble with a certain build of one of those two (don't remember which one) that added a device driver that messed with the CD each time I inserted one. I removed the device driver and the software still worked, but without the problem. Don't remember what the driver did or what it was called or anything.
