How much disk space (if any) if used by the Kernal? I've got two 18Gb hard drives, which should give me 36Gb of space, but Emplode says I only have 33Gb.

Unless Mardibloke palmed some dodgy drives off to me :p

Zero disk space used by kernel. The kernel goes into flash memory. Disk space IS however used by the root filesystem for the basic UNIX environment, it's not a large amount however, certainly a lot less than the amount you're talking about.

What you're missing could have to do with the fact that 36GB is a raw amount of bytes, and a certain amount of space is used in the ext2 filesystem itself. A long time ago there was a thread about this and I think 33GB was the right amount of real usable space for 36GB drives. I can't seem to find the thread now, though.

The biggest factor is in fact that the drive manufacturers quote in billion bytes (ie, 1,000,000,000 bytes per GB) and emplode counts in computer-GB (ie 2^30).

36 disk-drive manufacturer GB = 33.5 emplode GB

ISTR that's the GB we use in the calculation anyway. Would exactly explain your situation. The formatting overhead of ext2 is pretty small (especially if you do as we do and use "-i131072 -m0 -s1" flags to mke2fs which puts less inodes and superblocks on the disk)

Disk space... My biggest problem is trying to even get a bloody hard disk. Anyone with a decent price doesn't seem to ship outside the USA.

hybrid8... If you find a good price for a 30GB drive, let me know! Cause I'm in Toronto, Ontario. And even work for IBM, but have yet to find a really good price on a drive!

IF anyone is looking for a 12GB drive full of music with 1.03 developer... let me know if you are looking for a small add-on drive.

EDIT: (per Archeon's reply): The only reason that the music is still on it is because I wanted to make sure my installation of the replacment drive went okay. If figure it would be of use to someone on this board because it is an original spec empeg HD and has the empeg software pre-installed. I certainly don't want someone "borrowing" part of my music collection. If someone is running 1.03, they could simply install it and then delete my music. I am not about to crack open my empeg again just to format it. For me, it was a back up, but it looks like the new drive is working fine.

I should have posted more than my "one liner" above, but I was a little distracted here at work. My appolgies, I don't want to look like I was using the BBS as a pirating hub.

EDIT: (per Archeon's reply):

If you look, he was actually following up to fasttrack, who said he worked for IBM, yet still couldn't find a good deal for a 2.5" drive here in Toronto. :)

I ordered one this afternoon from OWC (www.macsales.com) which is primarily a Mac-oriented store. They do ship to Canada, which cost me $22.67 via FedEx overnight (which takes 2-5 days - nice naming convention). And the drive was an IBM 30GB (30GN series) for $195. Places like www.newegg.com have them for $152 or so, but only for people in the US (including Alaska and Hawaii).

There used to be a service run by borderfree.com which was a 3rd party shopping basket that you could use at these types of places, but they've stopped that service and now only promote their affiliate stores - kind of makes the entire borderfree.com site useless.

I afterwards remembered that a friend works for IBM here, so I also emailed him to see if he could get any kind of deals. After reading the above message, I won't hold my breath. :)

Hehe. Hybrid's right, I was replying to Fastrack's post, not yours SE_Sport_Driver.

I believe you're very much entitled to do with your disks whatever you want.

Well IBM has a online store for employees, but it's mostly new computers, laptops, and flat screens.. etc. They don't have laptop drives forsale. I'm going to drop in to the IBM Store tonight and see if they can order them.

Hey, while you're at it, you think you can ask them when those new 60gig laptop drives will be available?

Thanks!

Computer Geeks have the Fujitsu 30GB drive for $139, and they do ship internationally.

Wow, that seems like a good deal. Anyone used one of the Fujitsu 30GB in their Empeg or RioCar with the 10GB drive it comes with?

i'll let you know next week.

the 10GB drive shipped with my mk2a (serial 0401...) is a smaller version of the same Fujitsu drive, so I'm not expecting any trouble.

Ok sounds good, I'll keep checking CompGeeks site. So if they start to run out, I'll probably just order one up. I do know that my RioCar came with a IBM drive as seen in HyperTerminal.

re: Computer Geeks.

ARRRRGH!!!!!

Well, my $200 IBM 30GB is in town already. Now let's see if the truck makes it out for the delivery. I'm not in the mood to drive all the way to the airport like I did for the empeg.

Thanks for all the info.

Oh, and if anyone in the UK wants a 10Gb hard drive to use as a 2nd drive, I have the one out of my Empeg going cheap.

Cheap = I have absolutely no idea what it is worth
Easy = I did it no problem. Just follow the instructions. It's currently got some of my CD collection on it.
