This drive is written to in raw mode, i.e. it's not really mounted at all. The player just writes to it using low-level routines.

That explains the question I had as to why the player boots fast and still has some writable are on the drives. I know when I watch linux start on my computer it takes longer for it to mount the hdd RW than the empeg takes to start fully.
