The sony's are great, but don't be tempted by the noise cancelling version: They just don't cancel enough noise to make it worthwhile.

I've got a set of Noise Cancelling Sony's that I've had for nearly 6 years now. They are the folding ones that fit like earmuffs. The noise cancelling is great on airplanes. You end up playing at 2/3 the volume you'd normally play to drown out the engines. You can still hear them a bit, but the fact you are playing at a lower volume means less fatigue. What I don't like about them is that the folding parts have a creaky "plastic" noise at their hinges. So, if you move your head around, you can hear cheap plastic creaks. Maybe they've fixed this in the last 6 years. I notice that Crutchfield is still selling the same model number.

For situations other than a constant drone (car rides, flights, generators) they don't do much and may actually make noise louder if it can't lock into a consistant sound to cancel out. They are horrible in the wind too...
