Yes. In unix, programs have to have an execute bit set before they can be run. Otherwise they are considered data.

That's not what I meant. I know that the execute bit has to be set for a program to execute. What I meant was: Is it normal for a Linux machine to automatically tag every uploaded files as executable? And if not, isn't it that way for a reason? I'd think that the Empeg would behave like any other Linux box in that respect, and would behave the same way for the same reasons.
